CH-54 references?
Posted by Screaminhelo on Saturday, December 25, 2004 6:36 AM
I am trying to gather some info on the Sky Crane. I have had some trouble finding good reference of the engines and rotor head from Vietnam. All of the display aircraft I have come across have all been post Vietnam with the engine filters and possibly some different engine accessories. I also can't find good pictures of the underside, especially the hoist. I'm sure you can all recall the Monogram kit...it needs alot of help.

Now a double digit midget!!

Mac,

I'm gonna try to get up to the New England Air Museum while I'm home here in NY. They have a former CTANG Skycrane there, so I'll see if I can get some pics for ya, bud.

Mac,

I think the biggest kit out there is the Revell 1/72nd kit. Haven't seen any others of the skycrane. I'll see what I can do about getting you some ref shots.

Luchtvaart Hobby Shop also has a 1:72 Aurora Skycrane kit in the online catalogue. Or is that the same as the Revell-kit?
Also in this respect: is the outside of the CH54 cockpit the same as the cockpit of the CH53?
If so, we could use a (Italeri) CH53 cockpit to replace the Revell cockpit...
Just some thoughts, good luck!

If I remember right, both helo's were developed using common parts. You should be able to use parts from the 53 to spruce up the 64's cockpit. Remember the rear facing seat had flight controls for use during pick-up and delivery.

I think you're right Jon. I have considered using the head from an early 53 (I believe they turned the head around on the 53 with the D model). Any differences in the cockpits of an early 53 and a Skycrane would be minimal. The basic airframe of a 54 was a 53 without the cabin area and no driveshaft covers.

As for the Aurora kit, it has been a long time but I think that they used the same molds. Can someone confirm this?

Hey Mac,

I just found an old issue of World Airpower Journal here at my parents' house. It has a whole article on ARNG CH-54s. If you're still looking for reference material, I'll scan them in on monday and email em off to you.

That would be great Jon!

Hopefully the only thing that I will need to get when I get home is the kit. I am planning to take a month of leave to regain my sanity so I should have a little extra time to work on a kit. I think that this would be a good time to try and stretch my skills a little bit.

Mac

P.S.
They are saying that we will be getting out of here before the end of the month!!! Maybe that light isn't a train after all.

While looking for other photo's last night, i was going through Squadron's book "Airmobile" and found many photo's of the CH-64 in Vietnam including one of "Big Mother" being loaded with a 10,000lb bomb for it's third bombing mission. I don't know if this book is available, but it would help you guy's in detailing tour builds.

Here are a few ofmy pictures of the areas you asked for. Aside from the filters I don't think there are noticable changes to the engines.

Why doesn't everyone just post pictures here rather than emailing them offline?

My sources show that the Aurora CH-54 was released in '69, and featured separate doors which could be mounted open or closed. Judging by that kit comparison linked to by 'Tailspinturtle,' it would be worth ordering. I didn't know this stuff was still available overseas. I have the Revell kit, and while I never did build it, it looks to be pretty decent. Wouldn't it be cool if Monogram up-scaled this kit to either 1:48 or 1:32??

Here are a few scans from the driver's manual... I promised these to someone here a while back but I lost the e-mail contact information.

(edited to add that for some reason the pictures do not enlarge when clicked on... they are actually about 8x10. I don't know if I did something wrong or what)

FITTER,

I just happened to cruise through this thread looking for information on the Crane...and saw the thumbnails you posted!

I've got Mono's 1/72 Crane...but I've had a hell of a time coming up with any decent material on it....I've been to NEAM and have several close up shots (be happy to share 'em once I get home), but in the meantime, any chance I might be able to get my hands on those scans?
