Resin Parts For Helicopters, How Hard?
Posted by osjohnm on Monday, January 17, 2005 4:52 AM
Hi all

I'm seriously contemplating getting a cobra company resin kit even though its quite costly to purchase and ship here. I've seen enough kits where the builders have used cobra products to know that they are worth their price.

However I'm still new to helicopter building, only on my 2nd kit and I was wandering how hard is it to use and "install" a resin kit?

Should I rather hold off until I've built a few more kits or is better to jump into the deep end?

Thanks
John

Whether you use it next or not is up to you. Resin fitting is just like other parts, test fit, adjust and glue. I use CA glue. Best to test fit before painting in case you need to trim to fit.

osjohnm;
I too, have never worked with any conversion kits or resin parts before, but in the last two weeks, I have ordered three cobracompany update kits!! If you are looking to give your kit a more realistic and accurate look, then get a resin update by all means. Just go slow, and measure twice, cut once!
Just beware of sanding or sawing resin....it gives off a very fibrous and hazardous dust -- so wear a mask. Also, if you have a battery-operated motor tool, cutting out those parts will be 10 times easier.
What cobracompany kits are you looking at? I just received the AH-1W NTS update, UH-1N fleet upgrade, and UH-1N weapons set, all 1/35th. All very good.

Thanks for the responses

AH1Wsnake, I decided to start off with 1/48 kits. Therefore I've been eyeing the 1/48 Hind and HH-60 kits.

Ideally I would like a 1/48 AH-1W but I can't find it anywhere so I might have to go up to 1/35. Might be a good move, 1/35 seems very popular in the forums.

John,

Italeri makes a 48th AH-1W. Wish I'd known you were looking for one. Midnightprowler just grabbed mine. Looks like a fairly decent kit overall. Has raised panel lines and not such great detail in the office, but the overall shape is very good.

John-
Helo models are no different than any other models so it depends on how many models you have built in general. If you are experienced in modifying plastic kit parts to fit better or be more accurate, then you should have no trouble with resin parts. As others have said, just go slow with the cutting and trimming and continuously check the fit.
I'm currently building an Italieri 1/48 SH-60B into an HH-60H using a Cobra Company set for the Attack Helo Group Build. In general the resin parts are great and the fit is excellent. Also, the kit appears to be very well researched. I have been posting updates on my build in the Attack Helo Group Build Thread in the Group Builds section, so take a look. My album is at:

Good Luck,

Thanks again for the input.

Cobra, I went to Italeri's website and the Cobra isn't on the website anymore. Hannants in the UK have it listed as Discontinued.

Do you by any chance know of another online site that might have stock and deliver internationally?

I found a online hobby shop with stock!!!

http://www.lhshop.nl/lhshop.asp

The shop is based in Amsterdam and they keep stock of some really old kits. The other bonus is that they have a flat shipping rate regardless of how many kits u order.

I ordered 2x Italeri 1/48 AH-1Z Super Cobras. Based on some of the threads here I've noticed that the "Z" kit isn't accurate but it does include all the parts for the "W" version.

I plan to build a 2 tone grey "Z" and a grey, black, green "W".

Probably need some assistance on the construction of the "W" kit but I'm sure you guys can help when the time comes.

I have the Cobra company resin interior detail set for the Academy/MRC 1/35th scale Blackhawk. I'm just going to use the existing parts. Let me know if you'd like them
