Helicopter Cockpit and Interior Colors
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 28, 2005 8:26 AM
Having been away from modelling for eight years and still trying to find my research data on helicopters, I could use some help on color schemes for Vietnam era heilcopter cockpits and interiors, specifically the SH-2 Sea King, Ch-46 Sea Knight, H-21C Shawnee and UH-1 Hueys. Being a Vietnam era old fart, sometimes I get 'old timers' and can't remember what colors are what. Anyhow, I want to start to build again, since I went crazy on ebay for about six months ago I now have over 100 kits I need to build. Any help will be greatly apppreciated.

Just to pe a nit-picker, the SH-2 is the Sea Sprite and the SH-3 is the Sea King.

I Like them both!
I use Gunze Aqueous H-53 for colors on the earlier machines, it matches reasonably well. For the newer machines like the black and Sea Hawk The cockpit is black.

You are quite right about the model numbers, see 'old timers' again. I could have sworn that the cockpit floor and walls were a light gray, ie; Light Ghost Gray FS 36375? Thanks for the info.

Jack,

I think you're getting everyone with this one (both young and old). I had to go back to my refs and see what colors were in the helos...and alas...a lot of the photos are black and white. I have seen some Hueys with light gray control panels with either a dark gray or black floor. As for CH-46s...the cockpit interiors are black instrument panels with dark gray or black flooring.

Reference material I have states that interior color of HUEY's is
Dark Gull Gray FS36231 for all interior painted surfaces(some had floor painted flat black from the rear of the pilot seats forward)
Black and white photos can be used as a painting reference to some extent
