Hey Chris,

Good timing, I haven't been on here in a while!  The Tigre build is going ok, I suppose.  Unfortunately, I got the original Revell boxing which is ridiculously inaccurate for a production machine.  I got a resin update set from Defence Models in Australia which helped it externally quite a bit, but there are still major issues with it.  The tail is completely wrong and has taken a considerable amount of filling, sanding, building up with sheet styrene and more sanding, just to get it to look right.  I'm taking a break from it right now because I really want to finish it instead of throwing it against the wall!

I'm in the middle of moving to the new house and the wife will be arriving momentarily, so I will post pics a little later.

Take care!
Jon

Well Jon.. Its been a few weeks since we last posted on this thread, and in all that time, I have come up trumps with finding the Italeri 1/48 Eurocopter!..

Nothing around.. Starting to think its a mythe, or maybe I am just looking in all the wrong places?

Chris,

I just found a company that's been doing aftermarket stuff for the Australian government's Tiger display models.  It has all of the external mods necessary for the Aussie machine and is reasonably priced.  Drop me an email and I'll fill you in on the details.

Only issue with it is there's no cockpit interior.

Wow, I started this thread well over a year ago, and thought it died... I am glad some interest was taken in the Aussie TIGRE.. My four kits where left in a cupboard my wife using and the shelf collaped. The end result, my 4 built kits were all but destroyed.. I would like to get my hands on that 1/48 kit that was talked about at the start of this thread, or has Panda finally released the 1/35 badboy yet?

Cobra, look forward to seeing your Aussie bird!

Ok guys, my RoG HAP Tigre arrived today.  I must say, I'm not very impressed.  Looks like a Matchbox kit, molded in 3 colors, minimal detail, etc.

Does anyone make any aftermarket stuff for this kit????  It needs a complete cockpit, rotor hub, new blades, and a bunch of other stuff.  This one's gonna go on the shelf for quite a while.

As a side note, thanks to Grant, I've now got my fourth and final AH-64D kit for my article.  Hasegawa, Revell Germany, Academy and now Italeri.  Compare, contrast, construct!

Later!

The humbrol paints i used were no's 119 Israeli Light Earth and 120 Israeli Light Green. I also used no 33 Black. Airbrushed these colors match the real thing very closely according to  a friend of mine who works at Brisbane Airport at the Tiger plant. (Thats who i painted the model for. He built it, i painted it.) And i used the weapons from a Hasegawa 1/72 Apache. I'll have to get him to take some pics of it, as i gave it to him without getting any!

Grimmo,

Please do!  I'm waiting for my Italeri kit to arrive and will be doing it in Aussie markings once I figure out how to finish my Longbow production line!

I have finished a build of the tamyia tiger for a friend. i will post the colors i used, which match the colors very closely. A lot od modifying will be needed to accurately model it, such as the engine srceens and the gun mount. I will try and post some pics soon.

The ADF have actually taken delivery of the first 4 Eurocopter built Tigers already. The next batch will roll off our own assembly lines here in Brissie. AAAvn crews have also just recently been test firing live Hellfire rounds over Woomera. How much fun would that be? The locally published mag "Defence Today" usually has quite a bit of good up-to-date info to check out. As a side bar, the latest issue has a small pic of the 1st M1A1 AIM to roll off the line in the states for our crew to test & famil.

EDIT: Lee & Chris: To do the camo correctly, you will need to get your hands on a brighter green for that part of the scheme. From what I have already worked out, it looks pretty close to the green the Israelis use on their F-16's. The brown & black are the same colours we already use.

Eurocopter Canada sent me an information package on the Eurocopter Tiger/Tigre, including promotional literature that included detail photos of the cockpits and other areas. If you like, I can get the images scanned and sent to you.

Just wait for an airshow.. Australia never really has anything secret..... Do you have a link with pictures of the 1/48 version of the Tigre?... If you are going to do yours as an Australian version, then it definately will need alot of work....

Or if you are able. Could you take some pics of your kit for me?

Chris, have you had a look at the Italeri 1/48 Tigre?
It's not bad - but I haven't yet had time to see what differences ther are between the Australian Army airframes and the model.
The Italeri model is fairly nice to look at - some nice panel lines - but from the pics you posted, not totally correct - and the cockpit is rather sparse.
I don't think the Army will let me take pics of their cockpits, do you?

Cheers, LeeTree

No probs mate.. Always happy to help a fellow Aussie!.. I have been doing alot of modelling lately.. But this thing has really stired a fire in my belly!.. Its not often that the Australian government gets something new and cool.. So I am excited about doing this as a subject!.. They had also looked at the Apache&s aswell.. But I am sure this bird will serve its purpose well enough in replacement of the Huey Gunships...

Whoa!! Do I stand corrected, or what?
Looks like I'm sadly out of touch - and thanks for the info - now I have an actual airframe to model - at least the cammo will be easy and the markings are few.
I looked at all sorts of Australian Government websites and they were conspicuous in their absense of any info on the Tigre or its introduction into the Army helo inventory.
Thanks for the website of the ADF serials, and thanks again for setting me straight.

Cheers, LeeTree

Here is another pic I found of the Aussie Tigre!

Also.. I have order a few kits of the Tamiya boxed Italeri version of the Eurocopter Tigre..
And after looking at the difference in the details compared to that of the Australian Tigres.. I have a feeling that I have alot of work ahead of me, to make this thing look like the Australian version.. The kit has so much missing from it.. See if you can spot any differences and point them out for me, as I have a feeling there is alot that I havnt picked up! I have using the pictures in my earlier threads as my reference...

Well I have my local hobby guy ordering me 4 kits of this Helo from Tamiya in 1/72 scale.. It looks like a nice machine, and think it will serve Australia's interests well..

I am in particular liking the design as it is quite thin like a Cobra from the front, but bulky like an Apache from the side, and still very compact for an attack helicopter..... I think they have designed this bird with the best of both worlds.. And the Australian paint scheme is just sweet!.. I plan on doing a whole flight line dio with the kits I have ordered!...

Yep, Australia just adopted the Tiger.
There was a good shot of 002 in the latest issue of Air Forces Monthly. Looks like a pretty cool helo!

I am fairly certain Panda never put out their proposed Eurocopter Tigers in 1-35 like a lot of the catalogue I saw which never came to fruition. I can however tell you that the Australian Army have received the first 2 tiger Armed Recon Helos under the serials A38-001 and A38-002. They arrived mid way through December 04 at Amberley and hung around for 2 weeks(I saw them flying a few times look pretty tough but sound weird!) then the Army accepted them at Oakey to begin Acceptance trials at the Helo school. Hope that clears things up a little I would love to see a 1-35 Tiger ARH to go with my Blackhawk that i'm still too intimidated to start.

Cheers Cairnsy

Chris,
I've not yet seen a 1/35 Eurocopter HAP-TIGRE, but I've got the Italeri 1/48 kit - and it's not really all that bad, to be honest.
In some details it's a little simplistic, but the panel line engraving is quite delicate and should take a wash very well. I'm looking forward to building it, one day.
As far as the Australian Army having entered the Tigre into service, I've got to say that it's news to me. Hasn't happened.
They currently operate the Blackhawk S70A-9 and the Chinook CH-47D. There's also some Kiowas running around, but they're not really classed as forward combat area aircraft.
There's no Eurocopter Tigre in the Australian armed forces inventory.

Cheers, LeeTree
