Arty and Grandadjohn, thanks much to both of you. I'm leaning away from the Revell kit, but at least if I build it as a B model it will fit the Ia Drang timeframe.

The Revell HUEY kit is a B model, but not very accurate. Needs a lot of work to bring it up to standards. B models would have been used in the Ia Drang has gunships. The only other Huey kits in a large scale would be from Panda and Revell in 1/35th scale(UH-1D/H). You would need to build it as a D since the H was not in production yet. For gunships in 1/35th scale check out MRC/Academy, Can't remember the date that the C started to be used.(I'm at work right now and my reference's are at home)

The Revell is a re-release of the old Monogram 1/24 UH-1B. It is not very detailed and parts are overscale and thick. The best bet for a very detailed UH1 is the Academy/MRC series of UH-1B/C models, they are the best out on the market with lots of details, 4-man crew, and lots of extras. They have different versions to build different types of gunships, but could just as easily be a slick by leaving off the guns. For D/H models, the older 1/32 Revell UH-1D is a good kit with god details and great exterior details. The other option is the newer Panda UH-1D/H. It is a scaled up version of a 1/48 Italeri model. It is pretty bad in detail with very little interior detail and oversized parts, huge rivets and large panel lines. It still look likes a UH-1D/H when finished, just not the best on the market.

I would go with the Revell 1/32 UH-1D/H if I were you. It looks the best and would fit what you want for a Ia Drang bird, there was even one version with 1 CAV decals. I think it is currently OOP, but comes up on Ebay all the time. Ther are currently 2 on Ebay right now.

Good luck.

Revell 1/24 Huey Gunship (newer release) and other big-Huey suggestions wanted

Hi folks! I'm working through a backlog of ships my Grandfather left me, but I'm looking forward to my first new kit purchase later this year. I'm interested in making a big-scale Huey for the Ia Drang anniversary in November, to present to a local Viet vets group. So...

1. I'm wondering if any of you have built Revell's 1/24 Gunship (see below), not the old clear-parts version, but the newer release. Which particular Huey version is it? (The D model was used at Ia Drang.)

2. What are other good big-scale Huey kits?

3. This one's more a note than a question...My ideal is to give them a Huey that served at Ia Drang, but if not, any good Huey will do because of its iconic association with the Vietnam War. That goes double for a good 1st Cav Huey.

I greatly appreciate any help you can give me.

Here's the only info I have on the Revell kit so far, from http://www.hobbiesr.com/mon/mon-401/mon854675.htm---
