You know, they probably added only enough fuel to get to Dothan, in order to keep it light enough to take off on Guthrie's short runway. ie: fence I bet that was a sight to behold!

I too miss Ft. Rucker, and I miss McLins Restaurant in Daleville, but I hardly miss those ungodly swarms of GNATS that would cloud around your face whenever you went outside! Shock [:O] We called them the Alabama State Bird. Big Smile [:D]

Take care,
Frank

I remember when it took off. They used Guthrie as an air strip and had to take down the fence at the far end of the field to make sure it would clear. It then flew a short trip to Dothan. It went out to California. Actually got to go inside the aircraft while they were restoring it. I sure do miss Ft. Rucker.

P.S. Do you remember the old Constellation airplane that use to sit in the back of the lot by the museum??

Yes, I certainly do! It was one of MaCarthurs planes, if memory serves me right. Wonder what ever happened to that aircraft? It was there the last time I was stationed at the Mother, in 1978. Smile [:)]

Take care.

I saw that picture at the clothing Issue Facility when getting my gear for flight school. That XCH-62 resided in the "used car lot" in front of the old museum.. Such a shame, it use to be in front of the new museum. Also in the used car lot is the 8 bladed CH-47 with the mid mounted wings and retractable landing gear.

Some of you may have already seen this, but I just ran into it today.

A "D" Model Chinook slings the Boeing Vertol XCH-62 HLH, #22012, to it's current home, the U.S. Army Aviation Museum at Mother Rucker. I have no idea when this happened; it wasn't there in '86, but was there in '99..... one heck of a picture, aye?

~

Here it is on display at the Museum.... it's a shame this big bird was never completed, but at least it got some "air time"

Take care,
Frank
