UH1-D door guns

Howard; thanks for the info on 229 AHB. I have found some reference photos of both battalions, but it is a mixed bag. It appears that some were bare, some had battalion crests on the nose and I've seen some with crossed sabres on the nose. I'm leaning towards just putting a 1st Cav patch on the nose. At least he'll recognize that!

Reference the question about the 229th AHB aircraft nose art. In 1968, most of the aircraft did not have anything on the nose. Those did had the Distinctive Unit Insignia or "Unit Crest". In A Co. the pilots did not fly the same aircraft all the time, they got an aircraft based on the mission, how many hours they had in the last month and how many hours until the aircraft was due a PE. So the pilots had no real attachment to a particular aircraft. In early 68, we had just gotten or were getting our H models.

I noticed them too. I have never seen one like that, but couldn't find one with the more common bipod with vented handguard/grips.

Great pictures and drawings! Thanks for sharing! I noticed in the picture of the M60 with mount , ammo can and feed it apprears to have a "special" bipod mount which is hinged at the "mid" barrel location instead if at the end of the barrel as in the drawings. The "feet" of the bipod appeard to be at the tip of the barrel. If so it would make it easier to traind the weapon up, down and left to right. I still have my two quick release pins for my 2 M60's from my bird in Nam.

Thanks very much for the info. Special thanks to HeavyArty (as a former artilleryman myself) for the pictures of the DML kit. Seems like that is what I am going to need (x2). My model will not include figures, just a parked Huey on the ramp, but I like to cut up a figure head and place the helmet on the seat. I did something similar in a OH-58D diorama for my son who was busy flying one in 3-17 Cav at Fortress Drum in 2003.
I have some frequent flyer miles in Huey's, but am not an aviator myself, and so needed some good research info. Many thanks to those in the forum for helping; you've made my research much easier.
Anyone know if there was standardized chin art on UH-1Ds that belongs to 227 or 229 AHC in Dec 1969? Those were the two lift bns that supported him in 1st Bde, 1st Cav in Tay Ninh. I think they used either a 1st Cav patch or the bn unit crest as opposed to personalized drawings, but am still working on that.

I built that same kit once before in 81 and in 78 and when I saw a original still sealed in a pile of models sale at a local Hobby shop I freaked!

I spent one year on that helo ten years ago before my first girl was born. No internet so it was the local library and a few movies.

It is one of few models that has a place in the living room cabnet. ( no dust! )

Just a note, the M60s found in infantry sets and pictured above are not the correct version for a doormount. The doormount version is the M60D which has dual rear grip like a .50 cal, no front hand guards, pistol-grip trigger replaced with butterfly style for new rear grip, and a circular aircraft sight mounted.

This is what you get in the DML set, a proper M60D doorgun mount, and the spent round bag (not pictured) that mounts on the right side. Also get the standing gunner as seen below.

Looks like Troy, PapaEcho64, beat me to the pics. His look great and are the correct M60Ds (mostly, still missing front bipod). Looks great though.

I used the remote guns from the kit then added handles, c ration can and scratch built the mount from photos. The canvas catch bag was molded from clay.

Why I just use the M-60's from a tamiya infantry set - same with 50's, they seem to be better molded than what usally comes in a kit as it is. Now if they would only include a gattling gun I would be real happy, tho legend makes a real nice one for a door mount -yesagi(sp?) mount me thinks.

It's amazing after almost 40 years after the Revell Kit no kit manufacturer was able to figure out that a Huey kit needs door guns and mounts. Probably 90% of the UH-1D's and H's had the door gun mounts and yet we still don't get them with the kit. Even an after market kit only gives you one of the door gun mounts. I guess that is "good marketing"! Makes you buy two kits to get what you need. I had E-mailed Panda when the kit first was advertized and asked it they included the door gun mounts as in the pictures but they never replied. I still like my scratch built ones with swiveling mounts it's just a lot of touble. MRC/Academy we need a good UH-1D/H in 1-48 and 1/35!!!!!!
