What color Comanche Optics?
Posted by Trigger on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 9:16 AM
One of the few remaining things I need to do to my Comanche before it's finished is install the sensor optics, yet pix of the real thing don't show any optics at all. I assume it was to have used some sort of TADS/PNVS decendant? I was thinking gold for the larger turrent and clear with silver/black setail on the smaller, upper sensor.

Thanks.

Just checked all the pics I've downloaded and as you say there aren't any optics.
Italeri was being creative again.

Would it not be similiar in colour to the optics on an AH-64?

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. Which considering the subject matter isn't necessarly bad - but I want to make it an educated guess.

I think there were supposed to be optics there, but all the pix we have are of the prototypes.

I suppose 3 guesses are better than one....does this constitute an educated guess?

What are the odds that Boeing-Sikorsky would be willing to help us?

This is what I found on the web today, it is a mock-up and I can't vouch for how accurate the real one would be

Here's a link to some AH-1W optics. Different shapes, obviously, but the colors of glass should be similar. The left window is for the FLIR, and is basically black-colored glass. Since all FLIR cameras operate on the same principles, the color of the glass would (should) be the same for other aircraft. The window on the right is for DVO and CCDTV. That pane is transparent, but depending on the angle, can have a purple or bluish tint to it. Hope this helps.

Yes it does, thanks!

Now I'm curious as to why the Apache has a window with a gold tint to it then?

Apache optics. Not a great photo, but does show them pretty well. Clear daylight site on right, tinted IR sight on left, Pilot's Night Vision Sight on top.

The gold tint is an anti-laser coating, similar to the red anti-laser coating on AFV vision blocks, that only is visible at the right angel and light conditions. I believe Cobras have the coating as well.

No gold tint on the AH-1W TSU's. However, the gunner does have a lever on his sight that he can manually flip. The lever manipulates a light filter inside the sight -- which can be changed to filter out red, green, IR, and laser energy.
