UH-1D Detail Sets?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 7, 2005 9:49 PM
I just purchased a Panda 1/35 UH-1D kit and want to detail it. Who makes a good PE or update set for the kit?
Thanks in advance.

Cobra Company does a resin update and correction set. Eduard does a couple PE sets.

How is that UH-1D? As good as the MRC UH-1C?

Rob,
Panda's is no where near the Academy UH-1C series. It is basically an upscaled 1/48 Italeri UH-1D. The interior is overscale with a poor decal for the flat instrument panel. No interior details for the B pillars as in Academy kits. The seat posts for the rear troop seats are way too thick, they'd be about 6' thick if they were as big as in the kit. Overall poor detail in the crew and cabin area. The exterior has huge rivets and oversized panel lines. Most of the detail items are chunky and big. The box art shows door guns, but there are none in the kit, with the exception of a few special releases which included the DML Vietnam helo crew with only one door gun mount and gunner. It does look like a UH-1D when completed, just not very detailed. You definitely need the CC set to detail it out, or interior parts from the old Revell 1/32 UH-1D/H kit, which is what I will be doing, making copies from the Revell kit and I also purchased just the doors and B pillars from CC. If you have to have a 1/35 scale UH-1D/H, it is the only one out there. I still think the old Revell 1/32 UH-1D/H model is a better kit and it is much better detailed than the Panda kit and works fine with 1/35 scale figures and other vehicles.

I totally agree with Gino. The only other thing you can do is canibalize a Academy/MRC UH-1C kit for the transmission/engine assy, instrument panel and pilots seats. You could use the jump seat, fire extinguisher, and first aid kits too and a few other small items.

That would work too, but I think it would be cheaper in the long run to get the CC upgrade set than to rape a perfectly good Academy UH-1C of most of its parts. Then all the UH-1C would be good for is to show a wrecked hulk that has been scavenged, not a bad idea actually.
