Welcome to the forum.
I presume that you mean the CH-46 Sea Knight. Your title has a typo.
Anyways, I use airliners.net for alot of my references.
Go here: http://www.airliners.net/search/ and just type in "CH-46" in the keywords area.
You'll get about 4 pages worth of large, high resolution photos.
Good luck.

Does anybody know where to get some good aftermarket PE interior and exterior sets for this kit? Also some extra decals would be nice too!

Yeah I picked up photo-etch kits from Eduard from a company I cant remember off hand but when I get home I'll check it out and post it here tomorrow since I only have access to a computer at work.I hav'nt looked for decals though.
I think I've spent like three times what the kit costed me on just photo-etch!Laugh [(-D]

The PE and the decals are insanely expensive. I would like to build an incredibly accurate Ch-46 and present it to my father-in-law. He used to fly them in Vietnam. I can only hope my talent is good enough to create an impressive model.

From my point of view its much better to build one great model using PE or (and) resin parts and all decals (for sure aftermarket will be twice or even 3 times more expensive then kit itself) then make 10 models "from the box" witch are of averedge quality and rhardly represent the original aircraft....
If i was on your place I would try to find out as more info as I can from your father-in-low about particular helo he was flying on and build model-COPY of it.

Squidson2003...WELCOME!!!Smile [:)] If you Google CH-46, you'll get quite a few ref sites with pics.

tsteenbergen: You father in law probably flew the CH-46A or CH-46D (depending on the year and unit he was in Vietnam). Sign - Ditto [#ditto] with Andy's comment on research. If you get the 1/48 Academy kit, you'll have to "backdate" the model to fit the time period. Don't worry, there are not that many external changes.

give me your email and I can get you some pics. I work and fly in one in real life. Its not what he had back in the 60's but not much has changed.

I would love to have some detailed reference pics.
tsteenbergen2*yahoo.com (Please replace the * with an @) I don't want the spam fishers to get this e-mail address!

Also, I know this is an incredibly stupid question; does the pilot sit on the right side seat? I have never been in a helo or even been around them. I want to be sure I get every small detail right!

The offical seat for the pilot(aircraft commander) is the right seat, in practice the AC will sit in whatever seat he likes. Also if both pilots are rated as AC's they can switch duties in mid-flight or at stops, but never switch seats. Hope this helps

That is excellent info I sure do appreciate it.
One more question?
I have heard that Marine CH-46 pilots are required to land one of their back wheels on a rock. Apparently this is one of the more difficult challenges in Marine Corps helo training. Can anyone elaborate on this?
I was thinking of recreating an action diorama of this scene.

I know that Marine Corps helicopter pilots like to land on rocks, but they usually don't use the wheels. They like to use the fuselage.

Hi Folks! I'm still alive. Been busy with work and the family....you know.

Welcome squid Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

I highly recomend the Squadron and Cobra sets! They are NOT expensive at all....not compared to what most 1/72 & 1/48 WWII aircraft guys pay for thier PE sets.

Here is what I have done so far to the floor and cargo rollers:
http://troysmodels.homestead.com/ramp2.JPG

Has anyone heard if those aftermarket decals are ready for this kit? and maybe even with the DOOR ART!?

I have had all my aftermarket goodies and my 1/48 CH-46E on the shelf for way too long....Sad [:(]

Then came this BIG 1/48 B-24J project that took too long to get ALL the PE, decal, canopy and turret and resin stuff for.....and now that I have just recieved the last pe set for that........ I'm all involved in this BIG 1/6th scale resin 1960 TIme Machine model with lights......OH man! Banged Head [banghead]
Straighten up and fly right.....

I have a question that you can help me with if you can.Are the side hatches, the ones right next to the pilots, ever used and opened or are they only used for emergemcy egress?I would like to have them opened on my model to show off all the photo-etch in there. And if they are opened how do they open. Are they clam shell hatches or open like a regular door from the side?I cant find a picture of the these hatches open so I'm thinking they are only used in emergencys.
Thanks if you can help!

No, the jet doors all always in. They are for emergencies only. But we do take them out to work on the plane. They fold in half and are not hinged to the airframe. Give me your email and I get you some pics. The aft pylon are the clamshells if you go to cobra company .com , they have a resin kit with the canted bulk head with the engine oil tank and control rod with the U.B.A’s (upper boost actuators). I do not have any pics of that, but I can get them for you next week when I get back to work.

I'll look around and see what I can find from pics from my cruises. I used to fly in the 46's sometimes when flying medevac. I'm not sure how many in flight pics I have but I know I have a lot of them on the flight deck and such.

Hopefully I can find them and scan some over the weekend...

If some has a e-mial link on their post, click on it and it will open. You can then put your e-mail address in it and hit send and it will be sent to that person through FSM

I thought since I crewed Phrogs for over 2000 hours that I'd comment on the landing question.  Pilots with the C/C help will do mainmount (wheels) landings on anything we can fit on, whether it's a rock, mountain top, car ( long story), roof, etc.  We also do water landing and water taxiing which can be quite a hoot as you go motoring around floating up to the stubwings with motorboats and sailing boats looking at you half with fear half with amusement.  To get back to mainmount landings, it's a great way to bring a chopper into a small zone ( think cliff or small peaks, etc.) and let the ramp down so the PAX can disembark while the pilot floats the front of the plane out in space.  It is risky and a quick in and quick out manuever though as it's really tough because of their being no points of reference really for the pilots other than the C/C talking them through the evolution, they just see down the hill and out, not the back of the bird.  If you have any Q's give me a shout.

Dave

hi there,

If you go to  www.popasmoke.com and click on the Vietnam helo section and then CH-46 there are some great pics, especially if you want to make a small dio for your F-i-Law. There's one which I want to recreate of a -46 landing on the edge of a cliff on it's back wheels with Marines running out the back. The Pegasus set of Nam Marines have a few in running poses which you could use (if you're making it in 1/72 that is)

Good luck,   Rich
