Slightly OT: How would you scratchbuild a FLIR turret?

I am looking at trying to build my own accurate FLIR ball to mount on my Marine UH-1N. Any scratchbuilders have tips on how I could do this? What type of material do you use for carving and sanding masters?

P.S., I do have Cobra Company's Huey update set, but the resin FLIR turret is too small. I think it was molded for the earlier -60 update sets, and is not the same piece of equipment that the Marines use, hence my desire to build a more accurate one. (I'll probably end up putting the CC unit on my AH-6.)
