Obscure AH-1F Cobra question.
Posted by albymoore on Wednesday, July 20, 2005 2:56 PM
Hi Guys,
While thumbing through Squadron's AH-1 Cobra Walk Around book, I seen a picture of a late mod AH-1F with a Tracor M130 Chaff/Flare dispenser mounted on the tail boom. It appears there was a recess cut in the tail boom to accomodate the mounting of the dispenser unit. Does anyone know where I might find more pics of this set-up? I'm getting set to build another Monogram Cobra and would like to add the dispenser to model (along with a set of scratch-built inlet flow diverters Big Smile [:D]).

Thanks for any input.

*Bump*

Albert - I talked to Jon today and mentioned you had a Snake question. He's been busy lately and he'll be on the road for the next days, but said he'll check it out asap.

Hi Grant,
Appreciate you talking to El Tee Bernstein for me Smile [:)]. It must have been a sporadic mod as I haven't seen too many other pics showing the dispenser mounted (other than the two pictures in the Squadron book). Thanks again!

Cheers,

Hmmm... MBT70, you out there? I think I saw two F Model Cobras on the tarmac at Lewis, on the far side of the hangars. Could possibly have seen a chaff dispenser on one of em (ok, I was several hundred yards away, but it looked like there was something at the end of the tailboom!) Might be able to get some photos. Looked like they were painted desert tan too...

I'll see what I can dig up! I'm in transit to NY Wednesday and Thursday. Friday morning, I report in to the 104th ATKHB and do tons of paperwork.
I'll respond on here as soon as I can!

Grandad,
The first picture is on page 29 (the Thai Cobra pic) and the second one is on page 52 (lower right pic).

Cheers,

No chaff on those birds Jonny ... they're cocooned in zinc chromate for future museum duty and pulled out of the inventory about ten years ago. More like a time capsule. There is also an F-Model at Camp Murray on a tall pylon that we call "Cobra on a Stick." No Chaff there, either. Back at the house I have some detail shots of a last service year ship in Mogadishu ... really detailed with the intake mufflers and all. I'll see if it has the dispensers and post it. By then the Army Cobra was heavily reverse-engineered into a real fatso. Shoulda listened to the Marines ......
