1/35 DAP - After Market Required?
Posted by osjohnm on Saturday, July 23, 2005 11:52 AM
Hi all

I checked the Super 61 thread but my question wasn't really covered.

I saw 3x DAP kits in a toyshop today at a steal of a price in my currency and I'm toying with the idea of stepping up to the big leaguesBig Smile [:D] of helo kits.

Would have to find somewhere to put the monster.....cross that bridge if and when I get there. Is the kit a challenge or pretty straight forward?

Anyway I had a similiar discussion with Trigger regarding the 48 kits but does the 1/35 DAP need accessories? If I want the M230 then I'll have to go the CC way but do I need any other CC kits? If so, which ones.

Thanks
John

Depends on how detailed you want to get. It will build up nicely straight from the box. It does need another flare/chaff box on the tailboom. There should be two on each side. Also, the sponson boxes (only left if you go with the refeuling probe) are too narrow and do not represent L model ones that have the roll stabilizer bars in them. CC makes the correct width ones in their MH-60L correction set. No other parts are really neaded to update it. The CC MH/HH-60G set does have some nice additional pieces that can be added, like a control box for the external winch, new instrument panel and center consoles, pilots' seats with belts molded onto them, fire extinguishers and first aid kits, gunners' consoles, rotor brake, and a bunch of other small items. I used these sets when I built mine. I also used the M230 Cannon set as well. You can check it out here:

The Eduard sets look nice as well, but I have not used them before. Personally don't like PE myself.

You may also want to get the CC 7.62 ammo chutes out of the UH-1N upgrade set as well, since the kit doesn't come with any ammo chutes for the miniguns. Chris at CC will sell them separately. I also added empty casing chutes from coiled tubes left over from an old Star Wars Speader Bike model as well. May want to scratch the FRIES rig FASTROPE attachments as well.

Depends on how much detail you want to put into it.

I agree with Heavy Arty - depends on how detailed you want it to be...
As I said before, Academy's Black Hawk in 1/35 is a great kit!!! But from my point of view the detail on it can be compared to 1/48 Italeri kitSmile [:)] and way too simplified for big scale model. Just take a look at level of detail on Academy's F-18Hornet in 1/32 (its close to 1/35, isn't it?) and now look back at their Black Hawk series... Now closer to topic:
As Heavy Arty mentioned there are 2 aftermarket options - CC and Eduard PE.
even if you use both of them on one model - it won't be enough!!! You want a good looking toy - don't buy any aftermarket, want a model copy of DAP detailed appropriate to a big scale =have to scratchbuild a lot! And BTW, you'll probably want to by an extra tube of PUTTYWink [;)] to fill this gap for example

As HeavyArty and intruder_bass already pointed out the only two aftermarket options are Cobra Company and Eduard ... but they are not enough!

As an example I got myself the CC BlackHawk Weapons kit. It comes with much more accurate miniguns than the ones int the kit but they still lack the spent-shells ejector, so I had to build them from scratch.

And If you've read intuder_bass' topic you can see how mouch more work you could do on the kit.
Bottomline:
The more accuracy you want the more scratchbuilding you'll have to do!
