The Army didn't start making a real effort to deploy them until late 2004 so give them some time to ramp up production.

Pretty much the same for us, we use polyurethane tape on the main and T/R. If the Arts and Crafts shop doesn't get distracted during installation it stays on pretty well. Frequent engine flushes did us more good than those filters would have.

Damn, sounds like a Huey environmnet. We used to put metal tape on the T/R blade leading edges to reduce the wear and did engine flushes on a fairly regular basis and those little buggers just kept on flyin'.

GIno,
Sorry 'bout that. Didn't realize it had already been posted. I wonder how long it will take for Cobra to produce a resin set. DIdn't see any on the Army birds at Khandyland last year.

We've got those choking hazards on half of the NTC AVCO 'Hawks. What a pain in the arse! The APU's also have a cumbersome filter arrangement that makes taking the fuel control cover off a joy. IBF, Inlet Barrier FIlter I believe they're called. If anyone wants, I can post diagrams of them too.

We didn't use the inlet barrier filters (IBF's in Army speak) but I did get to talk to several CE's about them. From what I gathered, oil temp wasn't the issue, power loss was. If my poor memory serves, I think I remember them saying that you loose about 12% with the IBF's. The desert heat already limits power somewhat. The guys that I talked to were mostly flying A's and any loss is too much with them. It is not that much of an issue with a L because of the additional power available, but it could be the difference between 120 and 150 kts on a 135 degree day and I'll take every bit of go I can when flying in bad guy land.

The real issue with CE's was maintenance. They said it takes 20 min to remove one before you can get the inlet off. They also have to be cleaned. If any of you have a K&N filter on your ride you know how to do it, they are the same filter only bigger, and there are six of them per A/C.

I guess they are an OK idea but we just flushed our engines twice a month and had pretty good results. The sand did take it's toll, my bird's engines are now .946 and .889 respectively. That gives me an ATF of .917 and I din't always have single engine capability if the #1 engine kicks the bucket.

Wonder if they also loose any power with those on?

Sal,
Beat you to it quite a while ago. Last fall I posted about them when I saw a rotational unit here at NTC who had them installed. Of course, I can't find the post now. Someone also posted a link to a page with full specs and a PPT presentation on them as well.

Saw this over at the "pics from Iraq" section at the IPMSSLC Photo Gallery. Not sure if anyone else here had seen them.
