Putting a CH-53E back on Active Duty
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, August 12, 2005 10:16 PM
Pic of one of three Navy CH-53E being "called back to Active Duty" from AMARC in Arizona. The 53E is being off-loaded at MCAS Cherry Point for upgrades and refit before going back to the Fleet.

Looks like that bird has seen better days! Amazing what a little depot-level work is going to do, eh? Dragonfire, do you know if those airframes are going back to the Navy, or if they'll be sending them to a Marine unit?

In my experience some go back to the unit while others go to new units, depends on the amount of work needed, time it takes and availablity of other aircraft for replacements to original units

Navy CH-53E's are rare. Usually the Navy operates those big sponsoned MH-53E's. They'll most likely go to a Marine Corps Squadron. The Navy's MH's don't have the flight hours that the Marine's CH's have, and the Marine Corps has lost a few to accidents since 9/11. The Marine Corps CH-53E fleet is getting older quicker than what was planned.

Don't worry about the MH or CH-53E, Sikorsky is making more. Last year at the plant wide tour there was more being completed.

Apparently a new version of the CH-53 is in the works as well, the CH-53X. It is supposed to be made with a bunch of composite materials and have more power, a larger payload, and all new glass cockpit. Sounds pretty good.

The Marine Corps already received the last production CH-53E for their contract last year. Not sure about the MH-53E for the Navy. I can't wait to see what the next version of the Super Stallion will look like. Definitely will have MORE POWER!!! Arrr...Arrr...Arrr...Big Smile [:D]

Just read an article in the Marine Corps Times this morning...the three CH-53Es are going back to Marine units. Will take over a year to get them upgraded.

Don't know of any MH-53E being built in memory of a downed crew. There was someone here building a CH-46E in memory of a friend who went down in one within the last few years though. Can't remember who it was though.

I think you are thinking of "Fly-by-night Models" Oooops! I mean "Night Flight Models".
They were suppose to be coming out with an MH-53E and a bunch of 1/48 and 1/35 crew men. But, alas, they haven't been heard from now for about a year and a half. Isn't that about right, Gino?
Their web page had a dedication to a crew that was lost. They weren't building a model, neccasarily, of that particular bird. But, again, it has gone by the wayside.
Randie [C):-)]Agape Models Without them? The men on the ground would have to work a lot harder. You can help. Please keep 'em flying! http://www.airtanker.com/

Actually, the topic just came up a couple days ago on the Heli-Kit News website. Mr. Beasely, the one behind Night Flight, continues to insist they are making progress. As I stated there though, show me something to prove it. Still think they are going nowhere, anyone can do CG or CAD drawings, show me something concrete.

I saw that post on Heli-Kit too. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't their website vanish also? I remember they were planning modern SOF aircrews or something similar... they had lots of cool ideas, but I went to their site one day and - *poof* - it was gone.

Yup, their web site is gone as well. More evidence that they are going nowhere fast.
