Wing tanks on the MH-60K
Posted by mpabis on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 10:50 PM
I was wondering if anyone knows if the MH-60K ever uses the wing mounted fuel tanks? I was going to build the Minicraft 1:48 MH-60K that comes with the wing tanks, but wasn't sure if they actually used them or not. Any help is appreciated.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the asylum. There is a lot of information to be garnered from various people on this site.
There are a couple of '60' guys on the forums. I'm sure as soon as they see the post they'll be along to help you out.
If I recall correctly. This is a subject that has come up before and the answer was that the '60's' don't use the external tanks. Not positive, but that is what I recall.
Anyway, welcome and Sal or Mog will be around.

if you are talking about the gull wings that com with the kit the answer is no. I believe that those wings and tanks were an option that the army didn't buy. You can find pics on the net that show the K model with those tanks on but on most of the K models that are in service with the units they dont fly with either wings or tanks. I have seen a few of them in pics with the internal "robbie" tanks though.

So basically it boils down to if you are going to build the demo bird or one that is in service.

My 2 cents [2c]

I'm pretty sure those tanks are good for only ferry flights anyway. And since Kilos have air-to-air refueling and extra gas tanks in the back of the cabin like in the Limas and Pave Hawks, there's no need for externals. External tanks are just more weight, drag and something to get in the way of a gunner's field of fire. I'm not a 60 guy, just recalling what was discussed before about this topic. I guess it depends on the mission, some are scene with it and sometimes not, If you want to include them, then do so, why not!?

The upswept ESS wings were not adopted by the US Military, we stuck with the standard (downswept) ESS wings. Also, external tanks are not used unless it is a ferry flight over long distances, without in-air refueling available, and not usually in combat. The aircraft tanks and added internal fuel cells, along with in-air refueling capabilites make the wing tanks no longer necessary for the above stated reasons of extra drag, reduced gunner's arc, etc.

Everyone,

Thanks for the reply. It looks like the answer is no, so i will just throw them in my spares box. One less thing for me to worry about when I get it built. I appreciate the assistance.
