Hellfire loadouts
Posted by Par429 on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 10:08 AM
Just a quick question for the attack helo folks. When you fly with the 4 rail Hellfire launcher, do you always fly with all 4 missiles on the launcher? Or is it common to fly with less (due to missile availability or whatever)? Mostly interested in mission loads, less so for training flights, etc. For the Ordies, is there any particular configuration used for missiles on a launcher with less than a full load?

Thanks,
Phil

It could have half the missiles if it already fired the other half Tongue [:P]

Anyway, check this photo:

Phil,

Loadout depends on the mission. I know for Afghanistan when some of my buddies were there, they standardized on a single Hellfire per rack, full rocket pods and a belly tank in place of the cannon magazine (limiting 30mm ammo to 90 rounds). From what I've seen of Apaches in Iraq, they're flying with similar loadouts due to the lack of major targets for Hellfires (rockets are much better for taking out insurgents) and the cost per missile. I've seen a LOT of photos, particularly of late, of Apaches carrying 2 missiles per launcher, either two on the upper rails or two on the lower ones.

Just depends on mission requirements. More or less missiles can be carried due to any number of reasons, including availability, area of operation, suspected target types, weight or fuel considerations etc. Theoretically, you could place a single missile on any rail, and the system will recognize it. Doesn't have to be loaded in a certain order top-to-bottom or anything.

Thanks guys. That's kind of what I thought, just wanted to check. I have seen lots of pictures of models with full HF racks, and lots of pics of Cobras and Apaches in the field without full racks.

Thanks,
Phil

hey Par,
on HH-60Hs, here at HCS-5 we usually only put two missiles on the launcher. our sister squadron HCS-4 has put 4 on the launcher but i don't know how that would affect the aircraft performance. On training missions we usually load only one missile (a CATM) on the upper in-board rail as per current loading cheaklist. For proficiecency loads we sometimes load two missiles (DATMs) . A CATM has a real seeker head but has an inert motor and warhead, a DATM is just a training shape use to do training loads and could be perfectly represented by any injection molded kit missiles. I will look for pictures to post. hope this helps

Concur with all of the above. An additional consideration is if you are only going to put two missiles on a quad HML (Hellfire Missile Launcher) side-by-side is preferred to over-and-under. For the Cobra, what is being carried on the inbound store will also affect how many you can carry and where you should put them. Too many variables for me to cover all the possible options. If you have a speficic load or aircraft you want to model let us know and perhaps someone here can tell you if it is legit and legal.

Also, with the pictures you can never tell whether they are coming or going so a picture of less then a full load or one station loaded rather than another may be because they expended something and brought the others home. There is a set firing order for the launchers but you can override that and now that we are carrying up to three different types of HF missiles on the same station you may see one selected and fired from other than the automatic sequence.

Firehawk Ordie and supercobra-
Thanks to you guys also. Your answers were very helpful. I didn't have a particular loadout in mind, but just wanted to know if all the pics I have seen of partial HF loads were all returning. I am thinking ahead to building the Cobra I have on the shelf.

Thanks again,
Phil
