Huey Questions
Posted by Awood23 on Sunday, September 18, 2005 6:10 AM
ok guys,
I need some help identifying two types of hueys that I need to add to my collection. I need to know what version and if there are good/decent kits avialable in 1/48.
First would be the hueys used by the USAF at F.E. Warren AFB. I believe these were different than they Hueys I keep finding in that they have 2 engines/exhausts and 4 blades.
The second would be the hueys used at Ft Belvoir/ Davidson AAF for VIP transports. Im prettty sure these are regular old Huey's painted in VIP colors, dark green with white uppers/highlight. Any info on these birds would be appreciated especially for good kits.
Thanks

Without pictures it would be hard to ID those birds exactly, in general the AF used three types of HUEY's, first would be the UH-1F(rolls engine with exhaust on the rear side of hte doghouse),UH-1D/H until replaced by the UH-1N. Has for VIP birds they could be stock except for paint although the interior could be more comfortable by upgrading the seats, etc., you would need a photo to find out and detail a model. I have never seen nor heard of a 4-bladed HUEY used by the AF.
If no one here can help with photo's I would suggest contacting the PIO's for those bases and request some photo's

The USAF one you are describing sounds like a UH-1N, but I believe the USAF only uses the two-blade version, or Bell 212.

4 Blade version is the Bell-412, as used by Candian force, as the CH-146 Griffon.

The VIP transport UH-1s are VH-1Ns. They are standard UH-1Ns with extra commo gear and plush interiors.

In 1/48th, I believe Italeri's UH-1Ns are the only ones available. They are pretty good kits. There may be others out there as well. Don't think there are any kits of the Bell 412/CH-146 in 1/48. I have seen a conversion set to convert the Italeri UH-1N though.

The hueys used at Ft Belvoir/ Davidson AAF for VIP were UH-1H/Vs they were just replaced within the last year. Most of them went to MFO in the Syani (sp) and Kwajilane (sp). The Reg Army and DC NG had them. They are generally gloss OD with a white top. The cargo doors had "military district of Washington" on them. There are also AF UH-1Ns in the area, but they are blue with a white top and gold stripes. The white tops I ahve seen had pretty basic interiors. Some were the same as regular slicks, others had nice seat covers with padding in red, tan or gray.

I've only seen the Italeri kit, but if John's right and that's a re-box, then it's a good kit.

I've had both kits, I'm just finishing my build(used the Italeri kit) and used some of the decals from the Heller kit. They are the same kit except for decals.

Hi, I'm brand new here. Not really a modeler. Just an old vet. Not a subject matter expert either. I was stationed at FE Warren AFB. I believe my orders read to be assigned to the 809th. That unit was redesignated the 90th Stategic Missile Wing. When MAC took the unit in December 1973 it was redesignated the 37th Aerospace REscue and Recovery Squadron. The SQ HQ was at FEW upstairs in Bldg 1250 and the Flight, as it was known, was downstairs. Their were detachments in several other states at missile installations. I was assigned to the Jet Engine shop from June 1972 to April 1976. I was the NCOIC of the Jet shop from December 1973, when MAC took over from SAC, until April 1976. The UH-1F was our aircraft then. The engine was a T58-GE-3. The aircraft were almost all dark blue with white tops. One was a dull gray. I think it was a TH, last four of tail, I think, was -1234. I cn't remember the year code. When MAC took over, the aircraft were all painted gloss gray. That process may have already started before MAC. I can't remember. Too many years ago. The A/C now at the gate of FEW, featured on airliners.com, is not restored exactly as I remember it. It is tail number 65-07953. One UH-1F, 65-07922, is still assigned as a ground trainer at Sheppard AFB, TX, according to one web site I recently visited. It is a ground trainer. It was also at FEW during my tenure. I hope this helps someone. Thanks for keeping our old A/C alive in accurate models. I'd love to see some photos of models. Is there an accurate kit for amatuer modelers like me?

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] Welcome to the forums 575colonel!

Italeri makes a 1/72 UH-1F wih marking options to finish it in a SEA scheme or a Gray SAR finish. As to accuracy - I don't know too much about the UH-1F, but the exhaust is on the right-hand side of the doghouse. Italeri makes some good kits but be warned that at "braile scale" (1/72) the cockpit parts like collectives, sticks and rudders can be small - so watch out for the dreaded "carpet monster!"

Couple of places you can get the UH-1F kit...
http://www.greatmodels.com/
$7.85 + S/H

http://www.squadron.com/ItemDetails.asp?item=IT1229
$9.46 + S/H

Be advised that Great Models shipping doesn't exactly trip over themselves shipping out orders (& making sure that what you're ordering is "In Stock" helps)

Thanks guys for your posts.... If any has any pics of the birds the575colonel noted in his posts or any pics of the birds from Belvoir before they deactivated thier Hueys Id be gratefull
The575colonel, thanks for the info on FE Warrens hueys. Im afraid I was way too young to recall what the hueys there looked like. I was born in Laramie County Hospital in june of 75' and left Wyoming when I was two. Possible you knew my father though.I think while he was there he was working with the Crash Fire Rescue crews though he may have already switched to services by then. At that time he would have been an A1C or SrA at the most. I know he didnt make Staff till he got to Bentwaters.
