Perry frigate - Insane Detail question No. 4
Posted by mfsob on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 8:56 PM
I'm usually in the ships forum, but this is a helicopter question, so -

I am building a 1/700 scale Perry class frigate, which is equipped with an SH-60 Seahawk in the antisubmarine role. This thing is tiny, like an inch long. My question is, has anyone ever tried to add the MAD "bird" and pylon to the right side of the helicopter in this scale, and if you did, what did you use to make it? I'm stumped because of both the small size and the flared fins on the back end.

Done that job in 1/35, but 700????
I simply found a piece of (I think) missile body in the spares box and then added the 'fin'. I used a piece of thin plastic card and cut a circle from it. I then cut a tiny circle from the centre of the disc and then cut a thin 'slice' - like a triangle from a circular pizza - removed the slice and then carefully stuck the two cut edges from the remaining disc together. I started with a very thin slice and then put the edges together to see how well the cone shape would look. It took a couple of attempts to get the correct shape for the cone. Once satisfied with the shape, I then drilled all the holes in the cone before gluing the cone into shape. However, in 1/700, you probably won't bother with the holes.... I trust this technique may give you some ideas. You would need a very thin piece of plastic card for that job...
Hope this helps.

Well, after several attempts with ever smaller bits of stretched sprue and ever smaller bits of plastic, I gave it up because every attempt looked more like a Harpoon missle than a MAD bird, at least to me. My Seahawk is just going to have to be naked, I guess.
