                        .. what company makes a good olive drab for the Apache? or like a modern olive drab.

                        No Apache, nor any other modern US Helo is Olive Drab. The color is called Helo Drab and is made bt Testors in their Model Master brand. Testors MM #2024, FS# 34031. It is an exact match for the darker black-green color of Helo drab.

                        Gentlemen, I purchased a bottle of this today and, correct me if I'm wrong, but the color looks to not have enough brown in it. I'm looking at Vietnam sea Hueys, so maybe the color is slightly diffrent?

                        Different color. Vietnam era UH-1s were OD Green. The switch to Helo Drab came about in the late '70s to early '80s as helos went in for maintenance. All new helos from the late '70s on came in the Helo Drab from the factory.

                        EDIT: O.K., I was only a few years off. Guess it was mid '70s as opposed to late '70s. Thanks for having my back, Grandad.

                        Helo Drab was in use by the mid 70's, it was not uncommon for units to have a mix of the two color schemes. We could not paint the helo's ourselves with Helo Drab, it was done at depots during major maintanence or re-build

                        In that case, what brand OD do you guys find to be a good match? To me, MM OD green doesn't have enough brown in it either.

                        OD for the Apache? Or just for pre 1970s aircraft? For faded Helo OD (Vietnam era) I use MM OD, which works nicely. I've got a few Hueys in these colors and they're pretty good. For modern stuff, its MM Helo Drab all the way!

                        MM Helo drab.. On real AC this paint wears very quickly especially the ac that were overpainted Regular OD surfaces .. so weathering your finish is a must on "Most" operational ac.

                        I too thought that the helo drab should have more brown in it; however I tested the Testors stuff on real CARC paint and found it is a great match. BUT depending on who makes the paint, it may fade more gray or brown so you could always add either color to fade it out.

                        I have noticed that the surface the paint is applied to has more of an effect than the lot of manufacturer. Those @$#%^$ external tanks fade more toward the brown side while anything over metal leans more to gray. It also depends on what caused the fading. If excess soap is the culprit, it actually seems to go gray then brown. If you are talking about 610 then everything just looks like 23699.

                        Boy am I glad I decided to surf around the various topics. Thanks for the colour tip HeavyArty. I've got the Academy 1/48 Longbow to do, & would've used the OD suggested in the plans.

                        Xtra color also makes a good helo drab in enamel, if you want to go that route, its glossy so you dont need a gloss coat before decaling, only a dullcoat for afterwards. In acryllics, for the older 34087 painted birds, both Gunze and Polly scale make OD's that have that brownish faded look that Army choppers always seem to get. Weathering that paint job is almost a necessity on any kit as all the ones I have seen in my 22 years of service never had the new paint look.
