Decaling: Setting Solutions & Clear coats.
Posted by AirMedical on Saturday, October 29, 2005 10:29 AM
Hey Gang,

I'm working on a few helo kits (air ambulance) and will looking at decal setting solutions and clear coats. The paint schemes will be clolorful and finished in a satin to gloss. I would like the decals to look like they were painted on. Years back (early 90's) I used the MicroScale setting solution. Sometimes it seemed harsh on the decal, other times it seemed like it did magic.

What setting soutions do you reccomend?

What clear coats do you recommend that won't attack the decal? (Never used clear coats before.)

I was using a flat coat (brush on) on a couple interior decals and it has somewhat of a harsh affect. (I was told it would be o.k.) However, on a few, it seemed to work o.k. Go figure. (?!?)

TIA
John

I find I don't usually need a setting solution. As long as the decals are going over a gloss surface, you should be fine. I glosscote the whole aircraft before decaling, apply the decals, let them dry a few hours, then spray it overall with your final glosscote or satin cote. I use Testor's model master from a rattle-can (spray can) for my topcoats. I have had no issues, juts be sure you put the initial coat over the decals on lightly, too much and it can react with them and "eat" them. As to the brushing, assuming you used Testors dulcote from the bottle, as long as you only run the brush over then once, then let it dry without touching it, it should'nt be an issue. You can run into problems if you run the brush over them again when the dullcote is on them and smear the decal.

Good luck.
