CH-46E kit Question

Are you working on the interior pieces? If so there are a bunch of those ejector pin marks that need to be filled, sanded down or otherwise dealt with. They shouldn't be there and don't represent anything on the real aircraft.

Yeah, they are all over the kit.  They really detract from the realism of the aircraft, they are on the cargo interior, the inboard aspect of the wheels, etc.  The last one didn't have these.

No big woop. There are other inaccuracies with the kit that are harder to fix than the ejector pin marks but even with them the kit is way better than what we had in the past in this scale (i.e. nothing)

Remember the thrill of building a model before, actually flying, driving, working on the item your building? and before the interenet or Model clubs?  gee.....I kinda miss those days.

I don't mind super detailing as long as I have enough information and the supplies to do it.

It's kinda sad, but while we're on the 46E topic.  Some of the east coast phrog squadrons have gotten rid of their 46's or have been deactivated completely.  It looks like the Osprey is actually going to make it to the fleet.

Good question and point Heloguy.  I would use a product called 'magic sculpt' its a a two part epoxy that allows plenty of working time and you can almost get it to the final smoothness and shape by using cotten swabs, paint brushes and rubbing alcohol. I only wish I heard of that stuff a long time ago.

Those old 'Model putties' just stink. ..... when I think about the hours I have spent filling fine seems and trying to get a smooth finish out of that stuff!

Keep us updated on your Sea Knight...its a sweet kit! .....Funny I was all HOT about that model....finally got one....spent 50.00 bucks on upgrade kits and there it sits ...in the closet of doom.

Have you considered the eduard photo etch sets for this helo?

Hey thanks for the tip Papa.  I hear ya on the model putties, I tried those when I was a kid, and man, it just didn't want to cooperate.  I really like this kit, I'm so glad they finally put one out, and equally happy it was in 1/48th.  It will be sad to see these babies go, took many a ride in them when I was a trigger-puller.  Big fan of Marine Corps rotary wing aviation.  Now if that CH-53E would follow in 1/48th, that would complete the squadron. On this kit, I'm useing both the interior and exterior Eduard photo-etch.  I'll post my progress here soon, just placed the fuselage together.

You and me both! I logged over 1200 hours as a Crew Chief on Ds and Fs from 76 to 80 and seemed to stay one step behind the E. HMM-162 had taken delivery of two or three Es and were trading in their Fs when I left in 77. I went to HMM-164 and they still had Ds, when the Squadron came back to the States in 78 we inherited with another squadron's (seems like it was 161 but I can't remember for sure) Fs, some of which were still at MCAS Yuma.

Damn fine aircraft when they were only 5-10 years old! I can almost remember how to set the blade phasing and how to rig the flight controls. I certainly remember how to jump the relays on the left hand junction box on the Ds to get the heater to run on APU power and how to jump the cannon plug on the FLCT wire bundle to get the blade fold to work.

did alot of ot&e during those times and turned down many opportunities to ride in the ol' osprey after seing one take a dive in the patomic river and killed 7....
