A few of my Birds
Posted by viper_mp on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 2:45 PM

Well, I dont do many helos, but I have done a few. First up is a Bell 222U. This one sports a scratch built landing skid and custom graphics. This was done up as the local Life Flight helo that operates statewide. Base kit is an old CHP chopper.

Next up are a pair of US Customs helos. The first is their ops bird, a UH-60 Blackhawk. [note- the graphics have been changed recently to the Dept. of Homeland Security]. The second is a Bell Huey interceptor.

Hey!!  I like the Mercy One 222 UT.  Back in the 80's I had always wanted to do a UT.  I had a pair of ESCI UH-1D skids that were perfect.  But could never find another 222/Airwolf  kit.  I only know of one other person that did a UT on Helikit.
You did a fine job with the decals too.  Considering the deep panel lines on the model, you did a clean job.
I happen to have a few of Mercy Ones program pins.   Now if you can find an old Heller-Humbrol 350 Astar and to Baptist Life Flights helo.  That's Mercy Ones rival.

Good job!
John

I'd like to do the Air Life helo, thats the old Mercy One [and the backup]. Here in Des Moines, Methodist runs the rival, yet the same pilots and flight crews man all three choppers. Go figure.

And if your interested, I have the Mercy One graphics and decal guides saved. They are in Illustrator format, but they will open in Photoshop. Just boost the DPI resolution up to about 250-500dpi, then print. They are already scaled [or should be] to the Bell 222UT CHP/Airwolf model.

Yah, that's right, Methodist.  My bad.  Methodist Life Flight used to be under Rocky Moutain Helicopters and Mercy was under Air Methods; until Air Methods bought out Rocky Mountain.  Thus your same crews now.

I have a 1/30th 222 body I have yet to finish.  One of these days.  Thanks for the graphics offer!  I'm doing a set of decals myself of our local EMS helo's.  Cleveland University Hospitals Medevac 1 & 2 (BK-117's) and  Medflight of Ohio #3 (EC-135) #5 (BK-117)..

Cheers,

Where on earth did you fine a 1/30 body? I would love to do a larger Mercy One. I cant seem to find the AS350 B2 that Methodist runs. And the backup for Mercy I believe is a BK-117

Good looking choppers you got there. I have always liked the Customs Blackhawks. What scale is your Blackhawk?   I built a 1/35 scale Customs Blackhawk about 1 1/2 years ago. Keep up the good work

I obtained the 1/30th body from a local molder back in the early 90's. who was molding and decorating the display models for Bell Helicopter.  He had a few scrap pieces left over and gave me the body.  I've been trying to get the remainder of the parts from him but it's been next to impossible.  I'm going to have to make the master parts from balsa and make casting molds.  I gotta get new resin too.

I'm waiting on a bench top vacuum former so I can do the body out of clear styrene.  I was going to use my BK-117 and EC-135 medical master parts for the interiror.  But I have a lot of fabbing of parts I don't have like the whole rotor assembly, tail rotor, etc.

Here's some pics of the models I'm working on.  The photos aren't all that great but you get the idea.

Yah, I haven't seen a 1/50th Heller-Humbrol Astar model in years.  That was a nice kit.  I would love to get a couple of those.

Here's the link to the pics.

1/32 EC-135 & BK-117

I'm just a cut and dry model builder.  I build models like dispaly models.

Cheers,
John

If you can ever get molds made, I would be VERY interested in the 222. Also, where did you get the BK-117? I cant seem to find that kit.

Ebay was one source and posting a few "wanted" posts on some of the modeling forums.  I had a couple nice guys who happened to have a spare kit they were willing to part with one one nice guy from the Netherlands went out of his way to go and pick up a kit at local hobby shop.  He offered.  That was really nice.  There are some nice folks out there.
You're going to shell out about $25-$32 USD. unless you're able to be at the right place at the right time and get it for >$25.  Obtaining the kits didn't happen overnight either.  It took me a couple years to get the three I have.  I'm just now getting around to building them.

The best bet you'll have now is finding the ADAC anniversary kit which has the BO-105, EC-135 and BK-117 kits.  The pricing I've seen for the set was pretty reasonable.  Depending on were you get it, it's like paying $8-$12 per model.   It is available here in the U.S.  E-Hobbies was one source.

Sounds like I need to begin the search.

That would be one of Air Methods MD-900's.  Old McDonnell Douglas.  Some Dutch company(?) bought them out.  They're MD now.   They make the MD 500-E's, 530-F, & MD-600 also. You may know the Little Bird?

I've only heard of a limited resin kit from overseas but never seen.  Just all hear-say.  I believe it was recently  mentioned over on the Helikit News forum web page.

I did a quick google search, it is a MD-900 [you really know your birds].  the only scale version I found of it is for RC use, and its roughly 4 feet tall, about 10 feet long.

EDIT- finally came across this.

This should help.  1/72 scale though.  Yuck!  Too small.

http://www.helikitnews.com/issues/hkn134.htm

Edit:  Your Squddron link.  Good job!  Quite steep for a 1/72 kit.
But then again, I paid almost $30 for my 1/72 Sikorsky S-76.   That's w/ shipping too.

Nice job... I've gotten some close shots of the ICE copters a couple times, and they're pretty cool. Lots of interesting gear inside.

Great work on the helos.  I really like that triple deuce.  I want to make one for my father-in-law, he flies for Mercy Air out here in Ca., (Air Methods parent).  He flew the Bell for many years until they purchased a MD 902 Explorer.  I wish I could find a decent kit of that model.  It looks like the morphing of a Cobra and a UH-1N!
