Chinook ad
Posted by Cobrahistorian on Thursday, December 22, 2005 10:39 AM

Hey all,

Well, I picked up the latest issue today and was greeted by a Trumpeter ad inside the front cover with a big ol' Chinook on it!  Of course, looking closer I began to fret a bit.  Firstly, $149.99?  Weren't we all talking like the $89 or $99 range?  Even that was rather steep, but this is getting outrageous.  Its starting to sound like the Comanche program (no offense Comanche Test!) Then, it talks about the markings included being from the 159th Avn Bn, 101st Airborne in Desert Storm.  However, the box art clearly shows a big fat 1st Cav patch on the aft pylon.  Maybe I'm nitpicky, but especially if its a CH-47A, shouldn't they be focusing on Vietnam, not Desert Storm?

Anyhow, I think at that price, I'm gonna have to forget about building this one.

Jon! relax.....That is only the published 'suggested' retail price it can be from 100.00 to that or higher depending on the store....remember its a Trumpeter Model and they ( other than goofing up on important lines, cockpit canopy shapes and other details ) are some of the BEST kits made today and its a LARGE model!

This kit is clearly a 'A' model hook.....why the decal options ....who knows ....I figure that they only wanted to print ONE sheet that will work for the D kit that will soon follow ( cheaper that way ) and my shop tells me that Trumpeter usually follows up on different kit versions within 1 to 3 months and that decal info is old press.....I wonder if the BOX says that?....if it does then there 'still' could be a SMALL chance that the kit 'may' have A and D parts??

Good news though!  If its there it will not be long!!

Jon, I agree, the price is outrageous. Same thing goes for Trumpeter's 1/35 Hind and Hip. I'll refuse to purchase their products as long as their prices are so high. I feel that $50-60 is the top limit for a good large, plastic kit. For over $100, these things had better fly themsleves out of the box! Guess I'll be sticking with the MRC offerings for quite awhile.

Any other kit I would 100% agree but for those big HOOK fans that have been waiting for a decent LARGE scale Chinook for YEARS .....man! this is just too much to pass up!

Plus....you only live once....I think......don't ask my wife.....The same WWII Bomber nightmares that I have had since I was very young are getting more intense....really freaks her out....most of the time I don't remember a thing.

Trumpeter does not set the prices of the kits sold in the United States, nor anywhere else in the world. Trumpeter sells its' kits to importers and they set the respective prices. You know what that means? The IMPORTER is at fault for the suggested retail price and the distribution pricing. Now knowing this, here is what one can do, buy the kit at the asked for price when you see it or don't buy it and settle into shopping around a bit. The ridiculous price will knock 70% of the potential buyers right out of considering it, the avid buyers will pay the price. But there are not enough advid buyers out there to sustain the sales requirement to recoup the basic investment and the models then just sit on the shelves and gather dust. After tiring of the stock just sitting there it goes on sale. I purchased the 1/35th MI-24 for $65.00 US and the 1/35th MI-8MT $49.99 from a reputable catalog sales company. Yeah, I had to wait to get them but I got them at what I'm sure you'll agree is a fair price. As an example lets look at the MI-24. The MSRP (read IMPORTER) was $120.00. The cost to wholesalers is 55% discount. That means that the reputable catalog sales company paid $50.00 for the kit. When they got tired of trying to sell it for $109.00 they tried to sell it for $99.00. When that fizzled they had a fire sale of $65.00 to get them out of the warehouse. They still made $15.00 per kit and the stock ran dry.

Exactly! Same situation we could see this year with new Hasegawa F-18F Superhornet. I've been waiting for this kit for 2 years and when it finally came out the price was redicilous something like 75$ for 1/48 kit!!!

Right now (6 month later) you can buy it on LuckyModel.com for 49$..... I wont die if I have to wait another 6 months (still have like 10 models IN PROGRESS) and buy it for reasonable price.

Same with Chinook. I'll wait just few months more and I bet you it will be less then a handred bucks.

Hopefully some aftermarket for it will appear by this time )))))))

Since the Hook in 1/48th scale was number one on FSM list of most wanted kits, think I will wait for it in that scale and maybe someone will do it soon(I've only been waiting 30 years for it in that scale)

Has anyone here tried out this 1/48 Chinook kit?

http://www.swiftsite.com/rosemonthobby/robch47.htm

It's a vacuum formed fuselage, but the rest is resin and white metal.  I keep waiting for an injection molded 1/48 Chinook, but this one looks tempting although it's pretty pricey.

I bought me that kit and the resin and metal parts are fine but the vac form fuselage sucks big time!!  It is way to thin and very flimsy. I couldn't get any thing done with it.  Now, on the other hand if you can get ahold of the old aurora Hook, the resin and metal parts work very nice with this kit. Even if you can get just the fuselage of the Aurora Hook that would be great becouse you just about get every thing else with that vac form kit.  You can scrach build the interior.

Hope this helps.
