Seeking pics of AH-1Z flight helmet
Posted by HeloOne on Sunday, January 22, 2006 1:19 AM

Hi

I'm seeking images of the new AH-1Z cobra pilot's helmet. It's called TopOwl. My google search turned up a few low-res versions. The helmet's manufacturer website didn't help either. I do have two from usmc.mil but the image shows the helmet's visor covered with a scratch protector.

Basically, I'm looking for a TopOwl walkaround! Maybe one of you knows someone over at Pax River who could be contacted.

Thanks for your help.

HeloOne

Its made by Thales, here's a good link http://www.thalesgroup.com/all/pdf/top_owl.pdf

Cobrahistorian

Thanks for the linky. I had that one in my collection and was a little sad that it is sooo lo-res. I''ll keep peckin' away.

Since you're a cobrahistorian and all, do you have images of early- to mid-eighties USMC cobra flight crew gear (particulary white SPH helmets?) Big Smile [:D]

HeloOne,

Unfortunately no, I'm pretty focused on the Army end of the spectrum.  I'll see what I can dig up though!

Don

I would greatly appreciate that! Any chance you have a spare person around who could wear it as you photograph it? I ask because I use the photos for my helicopter aviation artwork. Having a person in the gear works better than having to imagine it on someone's head.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bingo!
HeloOne, hope you're still on the forum watching this topic. I think I may have just found what you're looking for. These shots come from the USMC Light/Attack Helicopter Program's (PMA-276) public affairs homepage. These shots are definitely high-res, so I will just post the links for anyone interested. The main webpage also has contact info if you're interested.

It looks like something a skinny model would wear down a modeling runway in Europe.

It looks like my old Mattel Tank helmet from the 60's. . .that was plastic too.

It looks like it would give you nasty whiplash if the helo stopped suddenly.

I'm sorry, but the Comanche had the right idea.  Smaller helmet with better capability.

Thanks for your help, AH1Wsnake--

Those links were the same ones I had (I thought I gotten them from usmc.mil). So the elusive 'TopOwl walkaround' still remains at large.

However, I did find a pic of one from an Australian site.

In the mean time, if anyone can find additional good shots, post 'em!

If anyone's interested, this is the route the Comanche took with helmet-mounted displays.
