Finished 1/72 Revell Sea King pics
Posted by Bossman on Wednesday, January 25, 2006 7:23 PM

Hello All,

Here are the 98 % finished pics of my Sea King.

Here's the interior shot I posted a while back.

This kit was a blast.  Lots of nice detail and LOTS of parts.  It's actually rather prickly to handle.  It's built straight out of the box with kit decals.  Brush painted, then given a future coat for the decals and a testors dull coat to finish off.  I added a bit of detail (ribs and stringers) in the interior, and I cut out the port side front door and posed it open.  This last operation was alot easier than I thought it would be.  I still have to add some actuator thing to the top third of the door that opens upward.  I heartily recommend this kit.  A pleasure to build.  Hope you like it !

Looks great!   I have the model on my shelf. I am going to convert it to our SH-3 SAR model here at NAS Pensacola. Glad opening the port crew door was easy. I feel better about trying that . Thumbs Up [tup]

Papa,

Yup, I've found Testors MM flats go on great with a brush, with very little evidence.  Sometimes there is a slightly thicker application of paint on the edges where two colors come together - like on the camo pattern.  If it's noticable, I just wait till the paint cures, hit it lightly with the lightest sandpaper I have, & touch up with thinned paint if necessary.  By the time a future coat and a dull coat are applied - it looks sprayed on.

I brush pretty much everything now - with the exception of the dull coat.

Medic,

I just used a nex #11 exacto blade and scribed along the already recessed panel lines until the blade popped through.  Minimal cleanup was required.  The kit comes with a whole bunch of extra parts for various versions of the Sea King.  I've seen several sources of aftermarket decals for Italian, Australian, American and other schemes.  I'm sure somebody makes PE and resin aftermarket stuff too.

Bossman,

What is the total length & height in inches of this kit?

Revell of Germany or U.S?

Papa,

Revell of Germany - Hence the German Marine scheme.

Approx dimensions as follows:

2-5/8" height, 3" width with Skua anti sub missles, ~2-5/8" without, ~10" body length, ~11" rotor blade span.

After comparing it with photos of the real thing - the colors are probably a couple of shades darker than they should be.  There is "MARINE" lettering on the tail that doesn't really show up because the decal text is the same shade as the surface.  I think it still looks pretty cool though.

Very nice job.  I like that port side crew door.  Did you scratch build the hand rails/support cables, or were they included?  I wanted to do that on my CH-46, but didn't have any reference pics.  I really like that bird, I wish it was produced in 1/48 still, I think the only one recently was the Revell Germany SH-3H.  Does anyone know of one still in production?  Again, very well done.  It is display quailty work.

Hey Guy,

Yes, hand rails and cables are just different diameters of stretched sprue.  I also drilled some lightening holes in the sides of the steps as in the real thing.

I've seen a Hasegawa 1/48 Sea King in a US Navy scheme at the local hobby shop - don't know if it's still in production.

I really like this bird too - one nice thing about it is that there are so many really different, colorful, international schemes that can be used.  I have a bright yellow British Navy "twin" that sits next to it (the airfix 1/72 kit).
