AH-1W Super Cobra looking for info
Posted by intruder_bass on Thursday, January 26, 2006 6:56 PM

Hi everybody!

I am planning to build Cobra from pics I found on web... I dont remember where I found them, so have to find out additional info on this bird - squadron, tail number, tail letter abriviations etc. I suspect this is MARINES bird and it was involved in Iraqi Freedom duiring 2003-2005.  Maybe someone here can help me to find more info on this Cobra? Is it even possible to figure out the tail number by these photos? I think the spade symbol on engine coiling can give an idea about the battalion...but I am not familiar to this one.

Thanks for any help

Andy

I've found the source where these photos came from...

Here is the link

http://www.navy.mil/view_single.asp?id=6871

Description:   Weapons are loaded onto an AH-1A  (?) Cobra lands for a refueling near Tikrit, Iraq where Marine Wing Support Squadron Three Seventy Three (MWSS-373) has set up a Forward Arming Refueling Point (FARP) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom

But still no tail code, no tail number...........

Yep, Niiiiiiiice and filthy, JUST the way I like to build em!

Our old UH-1B (Civil registered nowadays) came back FILTHY from a lift job at night. Looked great over that bright yellow paint!!!!!

I will be building this one as well one of these days in 1/35 scale, a tail code would help....

Ok guys, I found em!  Here's two more shots of this bird. The first one's got the BuNo, tail code and everything!  Looks like one of Supercobra's birds!  The hi-res pic isn't showing up, so the tail number is 162969.  Tail Code is UV.  Here's the link to the photo http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/Assets/2004/Marines/DM-SD-04-11658.JPEG

That is a AH-1W not a A, and the Squadron is HMLA-267. MWSS-373 are the guys that fule and put the Hellfire's on the birds. 373 runs the F.A.R.P.

I will talk to him tonight so he can get you the Brno #. If not My Squadron chops to the MEU in March, HMLA-267 are going with us I can get it then.

Intruder,

I don't have info on that bird, however a while ago I built a Cobra using CC's NTS up grade kit the kit is pretty cool.  here is a link to the pictures that I posted it also has a few comments that might be helpful.  I had more pics but couldn't post them.  Currently I'm deployed to Balad Iraq and the Air Force keeps changing our computer settings.  I guess we can't mess with OPSEC.  post lots of pic and hopefully i can check out your Cobra when I get home.

Built the AH-1T+ kit when it first came out.  Later on it was damaged while i was moving, I put it in a shoe box and forgot about it.  Last year i bought a CC NTS upgrade kit and rebuilt it I am much happier with it now.

Andy,

No problem, glad to help.  The whole shoot of that bird was on dodmedia.  Thanks to Grant's tip off, that is now my first source for pics.

Firehawk,

Stay safe over there.  My stick buddy's husband is flying out of Anaconda right now with the 101.  Hope things have calmed down out that way a bit.  Haven't been myself, but I've got several friends who have rotated through there recently.

Cobra,

We ocasionally get a wake call here but not as bad as last time.  the 101 is at the oposite end of the ramp that we fly out of.  Our birds (4 grey Navy HH-60H) sit between 4 MH-60Ls and a unit that is not really here if you know what I mean.  Army Chinooks, Blackhawks, Kiowa Warriors, and Apaches fly by us all the time.  What does your buddy's husband fly.  keep em' flying.
