HH-43 Exhaust
Posted by grandadjohn on Monday, January 30, 2006 8:47 AM

Anybody have ideas on how to paint that "burnt metal" look on the exhaust from a HH-43?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you are needing, don't have a picture of the H-43's exhaust can to look at.  I did some "burnt" metal on the aft section of my F-100 using some browns mixed with gold and blue mixed with silver.  I'll E-mail you a picture of the F-100.

Look into Testor's line of Metalizers.
They have a burnt metal and burnt iron which are really neat and can be applied with a brush.

I know it's only rock and roll, but I like it.

The Pedro's exhaust tube used to remind me of the rear of the F-100's fuselage.  Theexhaust reaches about 900 degrees by the time it comes out the tube.  We were warned about it during our first pre-flight safety briefing.

I use Model Master "Jet Exhaust" and then VERY lightly airbrush or dry brush the end of the exhaust with a 1:1 mix of MM "Rust" and "Light Tan".

Thanks for your answers and suggestions, nned to get the old scrap out and play around with it and see what works for me. I have the Metalizers at home and have used them for some exhaust systems before, just need to find the "look" I need

I will go wholeheartedly on this one. Either the jet exhaust (way too gold, tho, should be a darker color similiar to titanium, add some blue to the mix) and overcoat on the end lightly and around the rolled bits.

The March Fine Scale Modeler has an article on a CF-101 that has a good technique for the afterburner cans on the Vodoo.

I've got some shots of the Pedros we used to fly in during the war.  If ou have the time to wait, send me your address and I'll get some prints made from my slides and send them to you.  I don't have the capability or knowhow to post them here.  Don't forget to remind me of what you want.

Thanks for sharing the pictures.   The Marine version looks to be the early one with the radial engine in the aft cargo, then engine compartment.  I didn't know they made them until a buddy sent me a picture of one.  I also noicted you can see the different colors of gray on the UH-1C pylon area.  Someone had asked about that in another thread.

I have a picture of one of those early Marine ones in Army makings, they borrowed it for evaluation.

Vaguely remeber that thread about the pylon area
