Question for Trump CH-47A owners!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 8, 2006 11:47 PM

Hey guys!!!

I have a question for those of you who have your Ch-47A kit now.

Does it come with the optional parts to make the single and duel rear wheel set up??  I know that it has the struts to make the duel version like on all very early versions but does it have the single wheel strut vesion too.   This thought is eating away at me and I need to hear from you guys.

Optional is not how I would describe the Trumpeter 1/35 Hook kit.

Sorry Mark....It's duals all the way around. Can't find any of my CH47 manuals right now so I'm not sure if the rear struts could simply be cut down to one wheel or not....I'm thinking its not that simple...but the parts per strut assy are very impressive so far.

Anyone?

You would think that they would make MO MONEY off one GOOD kit loaded with many options rather than milk the entire release of just one basic kit?  I wonder if there has ever been publications from MRC or Trumpeter prooving that kind of sales tactics work?

Thanks Papa for the info.

The duals will work fine for the one in the high vis markings.

Not so sure about the other one though.   I thinking that that inparticulare Hook had the single wheel rear struts.   I'm gonna try crafting me some useing nails.  They are pritty simple looking and with a little research I think I can do it.   I may just replace my wheels altogether.  I've been looking at the many differant wheels out there and I like the wheels of a 1/72 B-17.   The diamiter looks about right and the hubs look very close to a Hooks hubs.   Something just doesn't look quite right with the Hook wheels, they look a bit small to me.

Papa and all you other hookers out there, please  if you build your Hook with the rear ramp down, don't glue the top half of it to the opening.   Put it inside the ramp like it should be.Wink [;)]

Enjoy!!!

You know what, guys?

For those of you who are planning on taking this beast on, you really owe it to yourself to locate one of the "Aerofax Minigraph #27: Boeing Helicopters CH-47 Chinook", by David Anderton and Jay Miller!     It is a virtual goldmine of detailing information!       On the front cover is a color photo of the CH-47 series "First Flight", with #94983 just after lifting Her into a hover! Wink [;)]

Hmmm... speaking of the YHC-1B, did you all know the soul remaining example, #59-04986,  now sits, rotting away, at the Structural Repair School for the United States Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia!

They're about to scrap it, and looking for an interested party to affect a restoration. (like the Army Aviation Museum at Rucker)     Would be a shame for the babe of the bunch to get the ax! Shock [:O]

You want some fantastic reference walkarounds on the early "A"?    Check these out! Wink [;)]

Great minds think alike, man! Wink [;)]

Oh yeah, something else I haven't heard anyone mention; the "gold" windows in front of the two pilots!     A sheet of gold laminated between two plexiglass windows, with electrical leads off the bottoms, served as a defroster.  (see below *inside view*)

(notice the label-maker tape on the panel rim... "Do not operate defroster on dry window.  This windshield cost $701.00" ... doing so, would cause these huge bubbles to form inside the glass panels, effectively ruining it)

(Outside View)

I'm thinking about cutting sections from a piece of copper window tint material from the auto parts store, for this. Wink [;)]

Take care,

Frank

Very interesting Frank....That window tinting is pretty thin too....hmmmm

1. How common was that kind of tint work on Hooks and did it depend on the viewing angle or kind of light to be seen and was it just the two main pilot windows?

2. At a glance the books I have are not saying just what Hooks used the dual rear wheels? I see a few Hooks that look like pics from Nam that have them.
