I have to be honest, from the pictures I've seen here, I was looking for more detail than is apparently on the Trump Chinook. Do I understand correctly that there aren't any seats in the kit. Also, is it possible to make a C model out of it? Although its been 20 years and a lot of Chinooks later, I've alway had a fondness for the C I crew, 67-18510 "Christine".

I also have a large database of pictures and I'm around Chinook everyday so if anyone needs something, I can help.

510?  Wow, I remember that tail number, too. :)  IIRC, the Inbreeders, er, I mean, Innkeepers (sorry, old habits die very hard.. even 20 years later!) had a bird over there that had the tandem hooks like a D.  Was that 510?  My memory is fuzzy as hell, but I remember there were a couple-three aircraft in the 271st that were, well, "odd" (Fat Cow configured, etc).  Ours were a whole lot more homegenous. Matter of fact, I can't even think of one of our aircraft that was really truly "out of the ordinary" for a C-model.

I'm waiting on the release of the D kit to make a Chuck.  I figure since the aft pylon detail (apart from the C-box cooler cutout) will be more Charlie-like on the D, it will entail a lot less rework to just wait.  I think it would be 100% easier to fill the aft pylon notch than it would be to rebuild or adjust the afte edge of the pylon.  Not to mention that the Delta kit is going to come FRBs vs metal blades..  May have to do some filling on some of the cooler screens on the forward/aft pylon, but that's minor.

I'm still trying to down-sample my 213th videos from the 1980s that I have.   Johnny, when I get a DVD whipped together with all the videos on it, you get DVD #1. :)

later!

Hey Wile E.

On your Question about making a CH-47C with the Trump CH-47A, I have to agree with Jon Primm. Wait just a few more months for Trumps D model becouse I has much more in commin with the C model than the A model does.  I sure am looking forword for the D model to come out.

Well, the name "Wood" sure is familiar. I was a Blackcat from 81-84, 87-90 and 94-95. I crewed 67-18546 the first go around, then 74-22278, and 88-00062 the second tour, the third tour I was a Flight Platoon Sergeant and ran Production control the last seven months I was there. Remember "Duffy's", "The T Club", "The Top Hat"? Richochet Alley, Soju and "The Drunk Bus"?Wink [;)]

You probably know Micky LaBelle,Rich Sparks.David Stone, et al. Check out Mark Feller's Chinook Crew Locater website if you haven't yet...

http://www.chinookcrews.com/

there are quite a few guys from the 213th and 271st listed there who were there the same time we were.

Yeah, the kit is pretty nice, but I think it would be easier to wait for the D model and convert that to a C model, (Different aft pylon, Blades, Engines, etc....) The front end of the kit looks like it is set up for a D and the aft pylon, engines, and aft gear set up for an A. The cargo hook in the kit is for a D, and there are a bunch of antennae that are right for a D but not an A. Also you were right, there are no troop seats and no 'guts' for the aft pylon and ramp interior.

There have been some posts here by some very talented people that shed some light on the shortcomings of this kit. Most people who don't know much about CH-47s wont notice or care.

I believe there may be some corrections/conversions in the works for this kit, so I think I'll wait and see what comes out.

120v, 400cycles, and it fit a regular wall plug. (I always thought that was odd.Get poked by that when you're back farting around the generators and you'll know it..)  I saw 2-3 of the guys in our platoon (In case you haven't figured it yet, Johnny was my platoon sergeant way back 'in the day'..Crusty old b**tard..<GRIN> ) with hotplates, coffemakers, popcorn poppers and the like rigged that way.  You ain't lived in the field 'til you've had an "egg mcmuffin" made on one of those old hot-oil popcorn poppers. Mmmmm. Yummy.

Also, what Johnny says about room is too true. Heading out to the field for a week, I used to tell the pilots "Don't sweat it if she hovers nose low.. I have a ton of pogey bait behind the sound proofing.." Crap like chips, bread (MREs can be made much better with bread, FYI), soda, *cough* beer cough*, etc.

If you're ever looking to detail a Charlie model (which I eventually will be, depending on what mods I'll have to make to the Trump Delta when its released), I can provide a lot of anecdotal information about ways we configured the interiors of our aircraft.  Mind you, there wasn't an "army standard" way, it varied from unit to unit and location to location.  (ie. US units might have removed the armor plating over the SAS boxes next to the companionway, whereas in Korea we kept them installed, etc.)  I have photos, too, but not in the "museum quality" way you'd probably expect :)

Absolutely! As has been mentioned, anyone not intimately familiar with this aircraft will not have any issues with it. What the Academy CH-46 series is to 1/48th, this kit is to 1/35th.

The MSRP is a little steep, but it can be had for about $115.00 at various on line shops. I imagine this will change after the "new" has worn off.

If Hobby Lobby decides to carry it a person could conceiveably get one in the  $55-$65 price range during one of their half price sales.

Yes it is a tight fit, and I don't know who started the whole "A Hummer wont fit" thing, but I found myself having to reply every time I saw it posted that "Yes, they will fit" because I was involved in loading more than a few of them... we opted to take out the troop seats because it made it somewhat easier.

Now, something that some people may not know, is that 2  105mm Howitzers can be loaded internally! I've verified this with people who have done it.

On the port side of the cabin about half way back there used to be an recepticle labeled "missle heat plug" this was to facilitate transport of the Honest John and Lance missiles. We figured a way to use this set up to run a coffee maker and hot plate.

Something I always liked about Chinooks is that a crewmember had all kinds of room when we weren't hauling stuff.

Here it iz in a nut shell mate.

What he said!....ts a good kit ....a dang good kit.

The only folks who have the right to be a bit miffed about some flaws are the lads who spent HOURS working in, on and under these bad boys and would see the kits problems right off the bat........ yes it is expensive but if you have been waiting oh...40 years for a DECENT sized Chinook model... its worth it.....I sold a few kits on ebay to get this puppy....kits I would have never built anyways.

If you like Chinooks and don't mind a few things that ONLY the pros would notice anyways and want a EARLY Vietnam style CH47 that would blow everyone away at yer local Hobby Contest DO IT!

All that detail under the rear pylon like in the AWESOME pic above which I believe is Franks super detailed 1/48 old Aurora CH47-A chinook.....to see all that stuff on any scale Chinook ( except by actuall picking it up ) one would need a dental mirror like those hard to please weasels at IPMS contest. Most folks will not notice or care.

UNLESS the builder wants to add all that detail....its all a choice....build for fun, build for accuracy or go crazy doing both?.....as long as your learning and having a good time....thats all that matters!

There will be plenty of aftermarket goodies for this kit out soon. Cobra Company makes EXCELLENT detail and correction kits for helos of all scales and I'm sure that Eduard will have some sets out as well.  This board will probably have TOP THREADS loaded with WHAT TO DOS, HOW to do its and all that kind of stuff.

Still an awesome and welcomed kit.  Depends on how detailed you want to make it.  Still looks like a CH-47A out of the box too.  Can look awesome if you take the time and add some more detail to it.  No kit is perfect and as detailed as some like them to be.  Also, you are hearing most of this from guys who crewed them and know every bolt and rivet on the bird.  I think it is well worth it.  Its your wallet though.

Hey all !!

I have a good idea what to use for the red neting along the walls.

You know those red mesh bags you buy oranges in?? Those should work good.   I have been saveing them lately just for this.   Looks like we will need alot of sheet styrene for the troop seating and other details inside the cargo cabin.   I noticed that the aft fuselage section has ribs on the inside walls. This should make good guides for making the stringers alinements.

In time I hope to see a nice interier detail set avalible for the A and D Trump Hook kits and also some nice exterier details too.

Just thought I would share the idea of the red neting with you guys.

Enjoy.

I like that Trumpeter atleast has a solid roof  under the aft rotor pylon!!

All the other Hook kits out there I've seen has a big hole there.

Just used the UPS tracking #  for my Trump Hook and it's in Kansas city Kansas!!  It's scheduled to arrive here on 14,Feb which is Tuesday!!!Big Smile [:D]

Hmmm... this is getting more & more interesting as we go! Wink [;)]

This shot doesn't show inside the aft pylon very well, but displays the Stringers and associated surroundings in the area.

LOL! , yeah alot of stuff was visible once you lowered the ramp. The APU, aft transmission, synch shaft shroud and generators would be visible, The flight boost pumps and utility pump were located above the generators  and were pretty much hidden by the generators and all the plumbing.

Wouldn't a nice resin or blown styrene add-in be cool?  A drop-in aft tranny/AGB & APU assembly, sort of a tray looking device.

Well, as the exhaust outlet on the aft pylon is above the "ceiling" in the interior of the kit, and given that most of that will have to be removed to make room for the APU to line up correctly and to make room for the aft transmission (or at least part of one) and the #7 and #8 synch shaft enclosure. along with other 'goodies' like flight boost pumps, a utility pump, generators, and all the associated plumbing and hoses (.e.g pressure and return lines pluse case drain lines for the pumps, along with wire bundles for the generators), and that isn't even counting stuff mounted on the sides like 200" accumulator, utility hydraulic cooler fan, plus all the flight control linkage on the forward upper port side of the interior where the push pull tubes and bellcranks transition up to the aft rotor system.

Yes, much easier to either leave the back end closed up, or do a D model. Confused [%-)]

If the D model pylon is set up like this one, you can get away with installing the drip pan and side panels for the aft transmission area, which means less detail, but the issue of the APU is still there
