228th ASHB 1st cav....Trumpeter decals....why??
Posted by Papa-Echo-64 on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 1:19 PM

I wonder why Trumpeter choose to issue decals for the Hook using the serial number of 57887 of the 228th ASHB st cav?

Is it just because it was in the squadron book?

I looked all over the ne and could not find squat on that particular Chionook.

It would be cool to know something about this helo (If I am to use those decals).....it may even at one point had nose art????

Does anyone have any info on this bird?

Thanks!

papa.

Hi Troy,

It appears Trumpeter not only used cartoons to reference their 1/35 Chinook's fuselage profile, but also assigning their kit a Tail-Number!      According to the VHPA Database, Mark Morgan's site (Chinook Helicopter dot com), and the 228th ASHB Historian, there was NO #57887 Chinook built... in fact, there was no #57887 tail number on ANY helicopter used by the U.S. Army. Shock [:O]

Can you say, "Back to square one" ?     I looked through the database, and there isn't an "A" model with those numbers in ANY order....  sorry buddy.        (and that's a $100 + kit too.... dang)

Wish I had better news...

Frank

Laugh [(-D]  Cartoons... LOL!! .....yeah it sure seems that way on some points.

Usually kit manufacturers release versions of the most popular, historic or interesting subject......not in this case.

Thats ok.....I have some decals from some 1/35 helos I can use.

Yup, I have also been told the unit markings of the square, patch, and bull horns are not accurate either.  228th had a different design for the horns and no square, or somehing like that.

Frank,

The tail numbers they do provide are in yellow.....how often was that?

I'm thinking.....one I never have liked the way yellow decals look over OD paint....two if I use those numbers.....at least I can make or paint my own custom nose art.

Its always better to build a 'real' bird though.

Man did Trumpeter scew the pooch on this one.

Hi Gino, Smile [:)]

The black square indicated an aircraft belonging to B Co/228th ASHB.    Here's a picture of FE Hugh Buzzell, B/228, standing beside his aircraft, "Miss Bev":

This is SP5 Hugh Buzzell with "Miss Bev" 66-0077. Hugh came to B Co from Guns-A-Go-Go. He says "Miss Bev" was a recovery ship prior to him getting it. He only made 2 or 3 of all those recoveries. Note he is still wearing his Go-Go pocket patch. ...Photo / Hugh Buzzell.

(no, this chinook isn't sitting in a hole, "Buzz" is nearly 7 ft tall and that's why he comes up so high on the aircraft) Wink [;)]

Troy,

Yellow numbers were only used on aircraft with Hi Vis paint... never on OD acft.    Some had the last three in white or yellow, but that was not the standard.

Mark,

Thanks, I will go check it. Smile [:)]

I have a tail number from a MRC 1/35 C Huey...it has two digits ansd a dash before the other five numbers in black....I'll remove the first half and hope that some dude does not have a Nam helo number book at the local IPMS contest.

Dang RIVET counters anyways!

Ooops.... sorry, was thinking about the other square.     Email me and I will give you the addy of the 228th Historian, who's the authority on anything 228. Smile [:)]

Troy,

Ummm... that number is not valid either. Confused [%-)]    Shucks, I'd just re-arrange them into something authentic if I was going to go that way.

Guess Trump isn't the only ones...

Take care,

Frank

Frank and Troy, thanks to both of you.

I did mean the box on the rear pylon around the CAV patch.  I hope someone does a good decal sheet for the CH-47As.  Otherwise, I'll have to make my own for it.Big Smile [:D]

Q: What about the white box around the 1st Cav emblem on the rear pylon.....is that correct for the 228th ASHB1970?

Here is what I think Trump did......

They used that squadron book for everything! including using the 'artwork'.....those decals are straight from that publishing.

Man....what a drag!

Troy,

Don't know about the white square (B Co), but found a picture with a white circle (C Co) around a cav patch:

Also... (and I know this is going to sound horrible), the 228th didn't have any more "A" Models in 1970. Ashamed [*^_^*]Blindfold [X-)]

...... someone needs to make a nice set of  decals with various units accurately represented.

Take care,

Frank

Troy,

That should be M-60, 7.62 cal. not 60 cal for regular armament.  Go-Go's had .50 cal's in the side windows and ramp.

I think I have seen one of Franks pics where they have a 60 right next to the .50cal. Maybe they carried both. Like a "spare".

Yes,

Each of the Gunner stations had an M-60 back-up weapon to use in the event they got the .50 too hot or ran out of ammo at a critical time....    It wasn't an M-60D however, since they had to hold it to fire.

Some of the gunners had their M-16 stowed nearby also.... and at least one crewmember, SSgt. Len Demaray, FE "Birth Control".. ... carried a Thompson Sub Machine Gun as his personal weapon!     In Feb '68, after #154 got shot down in the rice paddies just NW of the Citadel walls in Hue, Len was the last crewmwmber to leave his aircraft, running to the rescuing "Easy Money" who sat nearby... firing the Thompson as he went, killing 13 NVA soldiers who were already within the rice paddy.     He recieved the Silver Star for his actions that day.

Take care,

Frank

Makes plenty sense to me to have an M-60 "back up" weapon for an M-2.  My "back up" for my M-60 was the M-16 with three "banana" clips taped together.
