Jon,

Don't know the unit designation, as that picture was part of a group donated for my Army Aviation History album, but the picture says so much, it quickly became my favorite;

(1) They are fresh from the fight, experiencing a few moments of peace as they return to take on Ammo & Fuel.

(2) The door gunner looking over at the one making the picture.

(3) The uncertainty of what lay ahead flooding their minds.

Oh yeah, Cobra's..... Big Smile [:D] You may have already seen this picture, but I thought it was great!

Can't tell which company that one's from, since the photo's in black and white, but that's from the 145th Combat Aviation Battalion based at Bien Hoa, most likely in 1967 or 68. The 145th had the first Cobra unit in-country, the Playboy platoon of the 334th AHC . Doesn't look like there's much in the way of unit markings on that one. If the center of the diamond is green, its 334th. Yellow, its 68th AHC, or red, its 118th AHC.

Big Smile [:D]

Thanks John!

Thats a very interesting link.....

I found the 173rd AHC, Robinhoods....A pal of mine 'Mr. Combs' was a slick pilot for 3 years in Nam for the Robinhoods.

Check out page number 20 of Squadron signals Huey in action ....that beat up huey you see was about 70 feet from Mr. Combs when it took the first rocket to the nose...( which killed the co-pilot ).....what the book does not say is that Gary Wetzel's slick landed farely upright and He held back the VC with with his mounted 60....when he ran out of amo he went around to the other side to gather more .....on the way back the third rocket hit just behind the co-pilots seat and Gary's arm was badly wounded....( he later lost that arm ).....he still held off the enemy for a long time .....after some cobras came in and cooled the site down he then dragged some wounded over to another downed huey where a medic with injuries as well and could not make it to other wounded. He still speaks to Mr. Wetzel once in a while.

This is what Mr. Combs remembered.....I built a slick in 1/32 scale for Mr. Combs who was at the time.... flying with the 124th aviation unit at Fort Lewis, Washington.
I painted "little Angel" on the doors cuz thats what he had on one of his helo's....that was the name of his first girl born in the States while he was in Nam.

He said that the worst part was not being able to go back and help untill the area was cleared.......Company HQ said the LZ was ok for troop droop off......I gues they were wrongSad [:(]

Bkid,

Go to www.vhfcn.org That's the Vietnam Helicopter Crewman Network. If you scroll down to their "UNIT LINKS" hyperlink, it will give you a list of unit websites. Many of these unit association websites have photo pages. I've gotten a ton of photos and contacts through this website for my Cobras book. There are tons of Charlie Huey photos out there!
