Need advice on USMC birds
Posted by TD4438 on Sunday, May 14, 2006 8:34 AM

I want to build a few kits for a friend of mine at work that is retiring.I need to know what kits are available in 1/72 scale that come with USMC markings.Anything will do,but I'm shooting for Viet Nam era to the present.I'd like to mount the birds on a nice wood base along with some AFVs.If you guys have any ideas,I'd like to hear them.

Thanks

Ed

I made a file for custom decals for a 1/72 F/A-18C and UH-1N for the USMC if you'd like it, let me know, I'll email it to you. (It's big...24mb...so, I'll have to put it in a zip file). It looks like this:

It also has the stenciled roundels you see a lot on modern US helo's. You'd just need some 8 1/2 x 11 decal paper and some Future or MicroFilm and you'll be good to go.

There's an Italeri UH-34D in 1/72.  The kit could use some detailing, and it will probably need some putty.  However, it's a good representation of a Marine Corps classic.

Fujimi makes a CH-46 which may be appropriate for Vietnam, but I'm not sure.  I'm sure one of the Hueys on the market would fit the bill too.

I'm affraid there's no CH-53A's or D's around, but an Italeri HH-53C could be modified for USMC use.  I don't think that would require very much surgery.

CH-37's aren't available in 1/72.  I don't think anyone makes a vaccuum formed kit or resin.  I know nobody makes it in plastic.

Chris

Italeri also makes a 1:72 UH-1N, but if you want it to be a current version Huey, you'll have to do some minor-to-moderate work on it.
