Almost got to go to Fleet Week when I was a young 0311 (many, many years ago), another grunt company in my battalion got that sweet gig, we got to go to Puerto Rico (which turned out to be pretty sweet in and of itself).

I've heard that, as far as stateside TAD, Fleet Week is the place to be!  Well, I've still got a few years to see if I can't make it up there once.

A day in the Corps is like a day on the farm; every meal is a banquet, every paycheck a fortune, every formation a parade... The Marine Corps is a department of the Navy? Yeah...The Men's Department.

Man, Fleet Week is great. I remember going in 2001. We had our base of operations stationed with the officers at NYPD's helicopter airfield. Wore the uniform around town, and got the VIP treatment. Went up a few times in the phrogs and got some amazing sightseeing done as we zipped up and down the edge of Manhattan. I'd have to say one of the most memorable moments was flying UNDER the Verazzano Bridge!

I went to one fleet week.  We never had to pay for a beer, and the women... oh the New York women.  5 years in the Marine Corps is worth it for one Fleet Week.

Every couple of years the Marines invade Phoenix for urban wargames, it is nice to see them flying around in CH-46's UH-1's and AH-1Z's. They have actually repelled into apartment complexes, done patrolling and searchs down cities streets, etc. Kinda nice to watch them fly around.

Remember the first time I saw a C-141 parked next to a C-5, that is huge, made the 141 look like a toy.

You shoulda been here after Hurricane Katrina.

All we had is Black Hawks and other helicopters here for weeks!

They even set up a special information center at the Baton Rouge airport as well as sending special courrier Blackhawks to obtain documents and records from the transportation department here.

Not to mention every time the POTUS or the VP came here to visit. You see, this is where the Presidential jet would land, and then he took other transportation to New Orleans or elsewhere in the Gulf Coast region. Gawd those C-130's are HUGE!

I've gotten absolutely NOTHING done at work the past two days...the fleet is in for NYC's annual Fleet Week, and I'm constantly running to the window to see what's flying around.

I've spotted mock assault packages containing 2 CH-46's, a UH-1N, and two Cobra's on several occasions. Then yesterday, while dropping off some paperwork at our engineering dept., I saw the Blue Angels and Fat Albert doing flyovers of the fleet moored next to the Intrepid. I was going to "accidentally" get herded onto the Manhattan Bridge and make my way over there, but being assigned to Brooklyn...I'd be facing a rather long suspension if I got caught....lol.

All of the guys I work with were calling me with sightings from all over Brooklyn...sadly, the Marines won't be doing any mock assaults in Brooklyn. We were joking around at work and agreed that the reason for that is the strong possibility that they'd get some ground fire.

Luckily, I always take this Friday and next week as vacation, so I'm headed to Jones Beach on Saturday and Sunday to see the Blue Angels and I'll visit the fleet on Monday. I'll get some pictures and post them if I can.
