HELP! Cottage Cheeze spray.
Posted by AirMedical on Friday, May 26, 2006 7:17 PM

I think I got a hold of a bad can! Just attempted a final white coat on my white BK and it came out like a fine cottage cheeze texture!!! I shook it well and everything. I quickly stoped and am letting it set to dry. My thought is let it dry and then take a fine grit paper (600) and gently sand it down smooth? My other though was to use a light solvent wipe after it dries. Unless someone has a better appraoch. I don't believe this!!! Ahhhhhhh!

Advise anyone.

How are ya Med ..  Don't sound to good... It's ok I'm sure you will get through this fine,  There is a striper made for this reason,, I can't remember the name..  Most well stocked hobbie stores have it.It doesn't  harm the plastic at all.. The method you mentioned would work too. If you want I can get you the name of the striper,,, Sat,,,  I hate when  S%&$ li,ke that happens.. I once messed up on a 707 radar plane. It was a great build and my final step to clear it. I sprayed clear on it and set it outside for like 5 minutes and when I returned the sun had caused it to wrinkle and crack on every inch of the plane..  That was the end of that,,  Ok we are working on a frelon so good luck to you ...

Thanks Dave.  Whatever it was, it was wierd and I've never seen this happen before.  I took the Bk out and set it in the sun room this morning (7am) were it was warm until the sun was good and up.  Then I set her out on the drive near the garage and what appeared as cottage cheese must have been a combination of some wierd reaction with the paint and air bubbles.  Most of the paint settled and the garbled stuff shrunk and some popped which told me air bubbles.  Now it all lookes like a fine grit.

So it'll take longer now to finish to smooth things out before applying more white and getting to the colors.  That's o.k. tho.   The other BK with the nose cone got its first coat of white.  New batch of course.  I trashed the other stuff.

Later

Hey AirMed, bad break.  I've had that happen a couple times.  One of the last armor pieces I worked on had the base color gas out on a few of the edges, luckily, it just looked like the armor plate had some rust that had been painted over. I've had this exact same thing happen on a couple cars too.  It was like spraying that faux suade textured paint.  Time to start sanding!

Hey, there ya are!  It's been a while.

I worked on it this morning with good results.  We're looking good!   I'm going to start doing a prespray check from now on.  Looking to apply some coats tomorrow on both BK's.  I was working on the green EC and BK today.  Getting all the final detailing and assembly prior to decaling.   I've been away too long.  Finding myself doing stupid stuff. Nothing major just why did I do it that way kind of stuff.

Hope all is well,

John

Airmed,

Was it overly humid out when you sprayed it?  I had that happen once, and I believe it was due to the outside humidity.  Glad to hear things are shaping up though!

Hi Jon,

How's the hovering going?  Last I read you had gotten the hang of things.  Pull any loops yet like that Lynx video?Big Smile [:D]Evil [}:)]Wink [;)]

Seriously,  per your question.  T & H was perfect.  It almost reminded me of when a can has been stored in a overly cold area for a long period of time.  It was odd.  I know what your refering to regarding the humidity tho.  Good call.  I always watch the T & H.  It can ruin your day. Thanks!

Cheers,

Yeah, I screwed up a perfectly good Messerschmitt (is there such a thing?) by spraying outside in high humidity.  Yick!

As for the hovering, I'm back in the aircraft tomorrow after 30+ hours in the instrument sim.  Glad to not be flying a box anymore.  Six more weeks until the AH-64 course!

Sorry, can't say i have experience can spraying. I only use airbrush and revell enamels, even for primer coats. Did you solve your problem? Thank you again for your package! Wink [;)]

@ Cobrahistorian: How many rotary hrs do you have to fly before swiching to apache. What do you fly now? I'm happy for you, getting close to apache. I'm getting pretty close to Agusta Power (from Jetranger), and it feels like heaven, i can't imagine the excitement you are feeling Big Smile [:D].

Phoinix,

All my time right now is in TH-67s (206B3 Jetrangers).  I may get about 10 hours in the OH-58A/C before Apache transition during Basic Warfighter Skills (4 week phase coming up in 2 weeks!).  After that, its the -64 course.  I'll have about 115-120 hours by the time I get to the -64. Have 80+ right now.

Read with Australian accent.
You are looking at the young helicopter pilot in it's natural environment now.  Isn't he a cute little bugger!  Now that he has learned to fly he must now learn to hunt in order to survive!

I am glad to hear that things are going well Jon!  Flying will start to really get fun now.  Heck, I am having fun thinking about the grin on your face now!

Jon:  AH-64 soon aye?   Sweeeet!  Ho-ho-ho!  When you get inside it, just feel the force Luke.  Sounds exciting.  Keep up the good work.  Regarding the painting, I've been away for so long, It's obvious I'm pretty rusty on some things.  After these fist few kits I should be back to par.  Should be.

Phoenix:  Did you get the package already?  Here's a pic of the BK I'm doing and of the pin I sent ya.

That 109 is a sweet bird.  Saw St. V Life Flight fly into the hospital yesterday with their 109 Power.  These were taken a couple years ago before my new digital camera.  They had to land in the neighboring school yard because the rooftop helipad was being worked on.   The pilot was a real nice guy.  Had a nice conversation with him.

I got a helicopter ride in a FH1100 when I was 13 off that roof pad. Yahoo!!  That was awsome.
This is the only picture I have of it. FH-1100
My dad used to be a security guard there.  Used to visit him doing the night shift and we would go up on the helipad star gazing and watching all the aircraft fly into Cleveland.  You could see down town Cleveland from there and for miles.  Ah yes, the good old days with dad.
Here's a picture of the BK I got to go up in.  BK-117   This BK went down last year in Florida flying for Trauma One under N117US.  Everyone was o.k. tho.

Yah, I'm still canning it. (You're mocking me aren't you?Smile [:)]) Yah, gotta get my airbrush a spin one of these days.  Just need to get a checklist together with everything I'm going to need.  Never done it before.

Thanks guys!  Cheers.

Wow, i don't feel quite ready to go to twin turbine with my 200hrs, and you going to buckle up in that animal. I envy you. That's some training you got there. I hope you know just how lucky you are to get that dream to come true! Wink [;)]

I got the package. Pretty quick, ha?! Smile [:)] Never saq that FH-1100 helo before. Hiller? Glad to hear everyone walked away from that BK.

I'm not mocking you i was just surprized that you got such great results from a can  Smile [:)] U never used a compressor and AB? That's simple, don't worry. I got it together pretty quick and cheep, and it's as loud as a meduim classed fridge.

Yes,

....as a matter of fact, you're in "humidity central" down there at Mother Rucker, aren't you? Shock [:O] Big Smile [:D]        I remember those brief, violent summer rain storms down there, and how that just after such a rain, it felt like you were trying to breath through a wet, hot wash cloth, it was so humid!      Then you had to deal with the Alabama State Birds (red gnats) swarming around your face & eyes!!

But it was nothing a trip to McKlins down in Daleville couldn't cure! Wink [;)]

Take care and Godspeed during your upcoming transition! Smile [:)]

Hey!

I've used just about everything requiring an air compressor (industrial and commercial) but never a hobby air brush.  The only spraying I've done was with a commerical and industrial airless sprayer.

Yah, I know you weren't mocking me.  Just razzing ya.  Smile [:)]Wink [;)]  LOL!

I have a 5 gal.  air compressor (need to do some rewiring), a generic airbrush I boughts 5 years ago, filter, gauge, and a few other accesories, just need to get a better line and a few reducers and misc. fittings.  Just need more free time to fiddly-fuddle around some.

The FH-1100 was Fairchild Hiller than Rogerson Hiller.  Now it's FH1100 Manufacturing Company
Neat little helicopter.  Pretty roomy, nice visability.  Not very fast.

That didn't take too long.  I guessed it about right.  Enjoy!
