Cobra IR Suppression Update
Posted by DPD1 on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 6:26 PM
This may have been touched on in the past, but someone pointed out these photos to me... The Cobras in the HMM-165 REIN on the Boxer seem to have new IR Suppression nacelles installed. Kind of interesting looking... Pretty much like the Z.

I'm sure Cobra Co. will come out with that add on.

Great shots Dave! Thanks!

There's a really good article on the new exhausts here: http://www.vtol.org/pdf/61OperationsII.pdf

Thanks... I'm hoping to see the Z or Y while they are doing eval at China Lake, but they will probably keep them pretty hidden out there.

Jon, thanks for finding that great article. Really explains the theory and testing behind this new system. The heat buildup on our tailbooms has always been a source of metal fatigue in the structure and added maintenance -- i.e. replacing tailbooms due to cracks, etc. If there's any doubt on just how hot the tailboom gets, I'll say this; the two aft APR-39 antennas mounted either side of the vert fin would get soft and mushy, and actually start to lose their outer plastic coatings. The article's 120 KIAS image really demonstrates how that heat just pours back there.
