Jon, if you can't get to it with your schedule, just give a shout out. I can scan the sheet here for the CC NTS update.

I'll see what I can do.  I actually have the morning off tomorrow and I owe a couple people scanned documents.  If I can get away from these maps for a few minutes, I'll try to get over to the library and scan in the CC Instruction sheet (and the 1:48th AH-1W instruction sheet I owe someone else!).  I don't want to promise anything, since my schedule is subject to change at the whim of Bravo Company, but I will do my best to scan it in for ya.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for the encouraging words :) Do you know where can I get a scanned copy of the instruction sheet for the cobra set to have a look see ?

I'm still not comfortable with my skill to cutting clear plastic considering I may not be able to salvage it in case I measured twice and cut twice !! LOL ;)

Whopper,

Don't let minor surgery on the canopy discourage you. It is a simple "measure twice, cut once" operation that takes just a few seconds, and is well worth the effort.  The NTS upgrade is really a great addition to the kit.

I hope Cobra Company comes out with the new exhausts soon!

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies, appreciate them very much.

So its checking the era if build is OOB. Just for more knowledge about this NTS, are there any sites that delve more into the NTS upgrade ?

How does the cobra company set tackle the reduction in size of the gunner's canopy due to the new nose ? Does it mean the canopy be subjected to some "surgery" to make it smaller ? this will make the set out of my skill range :(. TIA

cheers

The 1/35 MRC AH-1W is one of the most accurate kits around -- as long as you are building a pre-NTS bird (I think you mistakenly typed NTF).

NTS is short for Night Targeting System, which was introduced to the fleet just prior to Desert Storm. The MRC model is based on a non-NTS airframe, so it is an excellent representation of any AH-1W from the 1980's up until shortly after ODS.

For the short answer, basically, NTS upgrades introduced new navigation gear, radios, and the ability to fire Hellfire missiles. These are all interior, electrical component changes. However, there were some significant exterior changes as well. The FM (sharkfin) antennas atop the engine nacelles were removed, and the comm antennas are slightly different. GPS antenna was added.
But most noticible is the new nose section. A new FLIR turret and laser ranging system was incorporated to the nose, making it look much bulkier than the previous system. These larger components projected back into the gunner's compartment, and necessitated a reduction in the size of the gunner's canopy.

This is the new nose that the Cobra Company set represents. The set also includes the new electronics in the gunner's cockpit, and a beautiful cockpit tub and intrument panels in general. The update set also includes the newer AAR-47 'fish eye' plume detectors installed in the very late 90's / early 2000's. There's more, but the question really is more about era, as opposed to accuracy. The MRC kit straight out of the box build up into a very fine early AH-1W, but if you're looking to model a late 90's or OEF/OIF bird, you need to look at the Cobra Company update.

Keep us posted

Help with NTF for AH-1
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 12, 2006 11:15 PM
Hi,

I have a 1/35 MRC AH-1W and was wondering would it be "very inaccurate" to build it OOB considering the kit have been around for quite a while and the real birds have had a lot of changes since then.

I went over to the cobra company site and found a NTF upgrade conversion. Can anyone help with info on what is the NTF upgrade about ? Are the upgrades all external as I see a new nose section in the kit ? Are the NTF mod done for all operational AH-1Ws ? Any help is greatly appreciated as my knowledge on the AH-1 is limited.
