Thanks, Jon.  I've added that to my wishlist.  I've built up a collection (well 3) of kits for demo teams in 1/48 and am trying to keep it consistant.

Monogram released an AH-1S/F in 48th which is the model you'd need to do one of the Sky Soldiers Cobras.  Its a pretty good kit, came out in the mid/late 80s and is still fairly abundant.

HTH,

Jon

The Sky Soldiers were something.  I was at the Dayton Air Show.  If you got there early you saw them twice. They practiced before it started.  My pictures didn't turn out the best but, wow, it was something.  Two cobras basically doing a knife edge pass.  Think of that for a minute.  I had hoped to get the pilots to sign my program but I didn't get back to there booth in time.  I picked up the Monogram Cobra Sat. and thought about building it as the SS, but I'd rather build it in 1/48. Are there any Cobras in 48?

Hey Heavy, I dont supposed you still have the canopy for the G do you?

Sorry, that one was built a long time ago and the canapy went AWOL.  Here are a couple options for you though.  If you contact Revell/Monogram, they should send you a replacement glass sprue.  Or, keep an eye on this post at HeliKit News.  Floyd Warner has a replacement AH-1G canopy, with the correctly shaped side windows in the works.  It should be ready for sale soon.  I will be getting a couple.

Grant,

I like the idea of a Red/Gold/Black scheme USMC demo team idea.  I bet it would look sharp.

Inspired by the look, I also have decided to swtch gears on my AH-1W and give it the same paint scheme. Some changes though to give it a different look sice they dont fly the W.

Or how about a red/gold/black scheme for a Marine Corps demo team?

Hey Heavy, I dont supposed you still have the canopy for the G do you?   I have a finished AH-1 [the original release] that is missing the canopy and the front lights.  It was an OLD kit bough at a garage sale.  It was missing the glass sprue.

It would probably be easier to make a S(mod) outta the two kits since the mod retained the round canopy.http://www.globalxs.nl/home/c/cjdj/heli/010.jpg

I hear ya.  I have just about every large-scale helo ever produced, multiples of many of them..  They do take up a bunch of space, but look awesome.

Good luck and show us some pics when done.

Yeah, sorry, its 1/35.  I have a lot of 1/32 and 1/35 aircraft.  Mostly helos [HH-43B, OH-6 Cayuse, UH-60L, MH-60L, MH-60 DAP, MH-60J [seahawk], AH-1, AH-1G, AH-1W].  Yes, I know, a lot of big models.

I hadnt even thought of splicing the G and the W to make a F/J.   But like I said, the W was already built.  As are my AH-1 and AH-1G [yes, they are different].

The Whiskey should be the Academy (or Italeri reboxed) 1/35 model, there is no W model in 1/32.  It isn't too hard to take a 1/35 Academy W and the Revell 1/32 G and combine them to make an S oe F model.  I did just that a few years ago.  Here is how it came out.

How about a Blue Angels-type paint scheme since the Whiskey is a USMC helo?

LOL.  I have a 1/32 F-18 that is going to be Blue Angel 1, I have Fat Albert, the R5D transport, and their old C-121 transport.  I have too much Blue Angels.

Besides, the Whiskey was already built, I was just undecided on paint.  Now it has a HIGH gloss black paint job, and the decals are already half on.  I'm copying the entire design, except the yellow stripe.  I just dont like that.  I wish they made a AH-1F in 1/32 [the Whiskey is 1/32]

Wow, that's pretty cool... Hope they make it out west. Apparently they'll have a good supply of backups. I guess there's still a whole lot in storage. A guy that flies one of the USFS fire Cobra's told me they bought 20 of them, because they were such a good deal.

Your not the only one! I hope that the paint on those things is an indication of some meaningful Army sponsorship of the group.  I'm sure that they folks in the Big Head Shed see this as a recruiting tool and a good way to get people like Jon foam at the mouth while visions of Firebirds replay in their mindSleepy [|)]

It looks like Screaminhelo hit the nail on the head!

Scroll about mid way down the page.  This is a link to the different performers from this year's U.S. Air and Trade Show (Dayton Air Show), where the above photo was taken.  They include a brief introduction to the group and the same link that Screaminhelo provided.

Mac,

I don't think so, but I'll call my Instruments IP, since he flies for the AAHF.  Cool stuff indeed!

"Dayton was the first in the world to see this performance."

Dog gone it!  One MORE thing I missed by not attending the Dayton Air Show this year!!  The one year I put off going to the show and I hear left and right about all the cool stuff to be seen up there.  GRRR.

Cool pic, though.

Great!  I would love to see them.  I was fortunate to see the Silver Eagles back in 1976 before they disbanded.  Might have been one of their last shows down in Harlingen, TX. at the CAF Airshow.  This was a print I made of my most favorite shot from my slides.  Heck of a shot.  Even the blades are in sync!

Pretty cool.  The old Snake looks great.  Guess it is a new demo team.
