Looking for info on the Academy UH-1C 'Hog'
Posted by hwells on Sunday, October 15, 2006 8:14 AM

Hi all

I'm looking for info on the 1/35 Academy Uh-1C 'Huey Hog', the one with the multiple rocket tubes.  Has any one built it, are there any reviews of it on the web, and so forth.

Thanks in advance.

Henry

It is an excellent kit.  Academy's UH-1Cs are highly detailed an go together great.  No issues with them at all.  They are full of extras and a crew as well.  I highly recommend it.

Here is a review of their UH-1C "Frog" version.  It is the same kit, but with different decals.  http://www.aircraftresourcecenter.com/ISL/Academy/1.35/UH1-C/UH1-C.htm

The most major "glitch" is the cups on the end of the Main Rotor pitch arms are upside down.  They should face up for the short pitch change link to attach to the middle of the scissors of the stabilizer bar.  They don't give you the pitch change link.  Also they neglect to tell you the long push pull tube goes from the top of mixing levers to the end of the scissors.  Maybe parts 44.  Any good detail shot of the M/R head will help you out.  I still haven't finished mine but I had to trim on the rear bulkhead for a good fit of the main body.  For some pictures of 174th AHC Sharks go to www.174ahc.org   I was in Maintenance, Witch Doctors, in 1971.  Picture of my pylon assy.  I believe you can see the details I mentioned.  There are a lot of other subtle details that are incorrect, but only a "purist" would tackle them like Andy!  I probably should do a good "review" one of these days!  Main error is the "B" model swashplate and rotating ring assy.  I "fattened" mine up a little, dark gray ring.

Oooopps.  Forgot about the push-pull rod omission.  Parts 44 are the right parts though, they just left them off the directions.  Using the pic above will help you place them.  Other than the above mentioned issues, they are great kits.  Good luck.

Thanks Mel and Gino.

I'm going to build it for a friend who flew one in '67-'68 (IIRC).  I don't remember his exact unit right now, but the unit insignia had a crocodile in it painted on the nose.

Henry,

You may want to watch out for the small cross links on the weapons mount.  They are all the same size but I had to shorten a couple for the mount to come out square.  Feel free to E-mail me if you need anything relating to the build.

I'm currently building that Huey Frog also and I have only two comments for now.  There was a misalignement problem of the two amin body halves on mine and a big gap to fill and sand so be prepare to spend some time sanding that bastard.  Also, the decals are horrible.  Colors are misaligned on them and they are not very crisp.

Other than that, it's a great kit with alot of details.

No matter where you go ....... there you are.
