US Coast Guard colors?
Posted by Aaronw on Sunday, December 17, 2006 12:48 PM

I picked up the Revell HH65 for a quick build, but I'm not sure the colors are right, it says to paint the fuselage fiery red, the coast guard aircraft I've seen look orange, but most are the white with orange stripe, not all red / orange with a white stripe like the HH65.

Also any suggestion for the correct color (International Orange maybe?) I mostly use Model Master Acryl.

Also it looks like the kit came out before the Coast Guard got many of these, any obvious modifications to the kit that I should consider to make it accurate for the current fleet?

Thanks

Model Master makes a Coast guard orange. I found it in the Model Master Naughtical color display. I also had problems with that color before this color was out. I have only seen the Naughtical display at one store in Florida. I haven't tried on line to locate it. The number is  Coast Guard Orange AN508 1/2.   I used to mix Guards Red and International Orange but that was hard to get it right .

                                               Good luck with your project,

Here are some pictures that I have.  This -65 was based at Traverse City, MI at the time the pictures were taken.

Aaron,

The Revel kit is a repop of the old Matchbox kit of an Aerospatial 365N. The USCG bought 96 airframes of the AS366G. THe fenestron is much bigger and has only 11 blades on the fan not 13 like the 365. In 72nd scale it is not that big of a deal, but the tail skid faring is, the USCG version doesn't have it. It is pretty easy to remove and clean up right where it meets the tail. There is no rear cabin entry door on the left or right side of the CG version. The Left side is totally filled in as that is where the avionics package sits, on the right side just the window is there. The right side cabin door slides aft, it doesn't open out. The most glaring ommision is the lack of the rescue hoist. I made one from a 72nd scale torpedo and spare sprue.

email me if you'd like more info.

Here's a link to the USCG paint manuals.  The Model Master CG Orange AN 508 and CG Red are based on the 1950's color specs.  The correct color is CG Red FS 12199, the closest match is Model Master Chevy Engine Red.  In the early 1990's I ran the CG Buoy Depot on Governors Island, NYC - and we repainted quite a few USCG 44' MLB and 41' UTB.  I matched the CG Red FS 12199 to some samples of Model Master paints.

CG Bob, I had already decided to go with Chevy Engine Red, but I'm glad to see I made a good choice, Thanks. I found the MM coast guard colors and almost bought them online but being that this was supposed to be a quicky build and I'm impatient I decided Chevy Engine Red looked close enough. That decision also saved me about $80 as I had filled my shopping cart up pretty well, I didn't want those bottles of paint to get lonely in the mail. Smile [:)] Don, thanks for the changes, not sure how much I'll tackle on this kit since I'm not looking for a super involved build but several of those sound fairly easy to fix.

I think Chevy Engine red is too red for the HH65, especially the A and B models. Coast Guard Red as used on the racing stripe and on the cutters is not the same shade of orange used on the CG's aircraft.

*edit* Sources confirm the above. The maintenance officer at Team ALPAT Kodiak Alaska sends: . . ." PPG color used at AR&SC is called TANGERINE, USCG Paint and Colors Manual refers to the same PPG coded paint as 'International Orange'. . ."
