You can see the sight for the rocket pods mounted on the right side, on the left would be the sight for the mini-guns or grenade launcher. As a note, the max rate if fire for a mini-guns is 6,000 rounds a minute, but it was never set that high. Firing that fast would burn the barrels out, not to mention the weight factor with carring that much ammo.

P.S. That is me in the photo

As you can see those rumors were true. How they got the parts into Hawaii is beyond me. Also that unit is the one my brother flew with during 1969-1970. So that is the reason I know so much about the site and some of the history.

Have you seen Cobra Company's offerings?  They have the full XM23 subsystem in both 1/32 and 1/35.  They also do an XM-93 set that includes 2 M134s in 1/35 as well.  Cobra Company is great and they offer a wide variety of AM helo sets.  I have used quite a few of them and can't complain.  The owner, Chris, is happy to sell individual pieces out of the sets as well.  I highly recommend them.

Dragon also has an XM23 mount and gunner in their Vietnam Helo Crew set.  However, you would need two sets since only one is included in each.  I believe this set is out of production.  It does pop up on eBay from time to time though.

Good luck.

thanks again Gino i have tried to get hold of the dragon crew set to no avail, just looked at the cobra company door guns and they look great, you have been ver helpful m8 thanks alot Pirate [oX)]

Very true, the RAAf used the M158 7 tube on thier M21's as far as i know so Italeri couldnt even get thier mistake wrong lol i dont think bushrangers used M200's, though i may be wrong. either way the US army never had forward mounted M21 Sub systems it was an Australian invention in the field, originaly mounted behind the doors it made the UH-1H unstable when fireing so after experimentation the forward mount was adopted. it breaks my heart that over 58.000 men lost thier lives in vietnam (828 killed in US Marine helos alone) and the model companies cant get their homework right. but if you want a German messershmitt or other ww2 craft, there they are in the box in all the detail and splendor of the original, i know im having a moan but it upsets me and for your father i have the upmost respect, it was no easy job and im sure he would be very proud that you are following in his huey footsteps, from the lads on the ground those angels from above wouldnt have felt so angelic without those 60 gunners watching over themPirate [oX)]

For another option, the Panda USAF/USMC UH-1N gunship in 1/35 comes with two of the Dragon weapons sprues to give you two XM23 mounts, and 2 free M60s as well.  It may also be OOP, but is available on eBay as well.

Good luck.

To build the MRC Muskets version you may want t oconsider the fact that the unit had at one time chrome plated the miniguns to make them run better and it was done only one that particular Helo. They also did a pair where the rings around the barrels and some otherparts where chromed but not all over like on the MRC kits actual aircraft.

Also there is a picture of one of there Helos with the grenade launcher in case you want to do one.

Here is one with the early rocket launcher. I'm not sure of the model number

Andy,

I understand your frustration with the lack of doorguns on Huey models.  My father was a doorgunner, and i can't imagine a Huey, much less a gunship, without a couple of 60's in the door.  It's great to see that the MRC Hueys come with two "free 60's" each.  I finally resorted to photoetched 60's for my 1/72 scale models.  My other complaint with Huey kit manufacturers is their seeming total lack of understanding of what various variants were called or how they were armed.  Italeri's rebox of the Esci UH-1D "HOG," which was renamed "Slick" but features box art of a D model with the XM-21 system only seen on RAAF armed D-models, springs to mind.  Not only is it not a HOG ship it certainly couldn't be called a"Slick" with all those guns and rockets!  However, it is a great source for 1/72 miniguns.  Take what you can get I guess.

Nice one, thanks alot Gino & Ray i didnt know the frog kit was out When i got the Heavy hog, its a shame they didnt include miniguns in both kits, i was getting tempted to use the mini's from my revell UH-1H gunship but thats 1/32 scale and wasnt sure if it would work, but im torn between turning that into a bushranger or leaving the guns off for a slick, its been sitting in the box for over a year at the dread thought of scratch building the M23 M60's or the twin 60's for the bushranger im not that talented yet lol, cant believe that even though almost every UH-1H/D from vietnam had M23 subsystems, none of the model companies include the 60's in their kit! baffles me, a huey aint a huey without those m60's hanging off it .. thanks again guys Wink [;)]

Andy,

Gino is right.  The other place to get the miniguns is the MRC Gunship kit #BA104.  The decal sheet is for a Muskets bird and comes with teh XM-21 system only.  I have all three MRC 1\35 C-models and the Frog kit is definitely the most generous with the weapons including almost every combination commonly used in Vietnam.  Good luck with your bird.

The UH-1C Frog kit does indeed include the parts for the M134 miniguns and their mounts.  The Frog kit includes all the weapons sprues from their earlier UH-1C kits as well.  You can choose from any combination you like.  Sorry, I don't have a set to trade though.

Here is a review from Aircraft Resource Center that shows all the sprues as well.

Good luck.

Hello all Smile [:)] just joined today after reading some posts, looks like a great site, my reason for posting is i saw a thread somewhere about the MRC/Academy UH-1C Frog Having The M134 miniguns included, just wondered if someone could confirm this for me before i try and track one down, as i recently bought the Heavy Hog version which includes the XM3 & M200 Rocket Launchers & M5 Grenade launcher but no miniguns Boohoo [BH] my aim is to build a huey with miniguns and M158 rocket launchers, if you can confirm the miniguns are included in the frog kit or have some spare i would be more than grateful for the info and happy to swap for the XM3's M200's and the M5 grenade launcher .. thanks in advance

Andy
