What's even more confusing is that the M16 system used 4 M60's but no M16's!  The M16 armament system was composed of the M6 quad M60C system and XM157 or M158 7 shot rocket pods just as Gino says.  I agree that the Army could have chosen a less ambiguous designation, though.

Yes, the M16 armament system is duel M60C MGs and an M157 7-shot rocket pod on each side of the helo.  Looks like this:

Do you mean the M60 system? I have the Monogram 1/24 UH-1B and it has the M60 gun system.

I may have been mistaken about the D-model thing. I am sure my brother-in-law, Tom Dana, flew gunships. Melgyver, if you can remember, please fill me in on details of the aircraft Tom flew mostly.

HeavyArty is correct, the 174th never had B's just C's for Gunships and later a few M's.  The Slicks were D's and H's.  We have a list of all the birds in the 174th by tail number on the web page.

If he flew a gunship w/M-16 mounts, it was not a D nor an H model.  The US Army only used the B and C models as gunships mounting fixed weapons in the various configurations.  The D and H models all had M23 gunmounts (M60D on a pintle in the rear doorgun position) and were known as Slicks. They were used as troop carriers. 

There were a few more differances in the D and H model, but they are very similar.  The H was basically an upgraded D.  All Ds were converted to H models after '67.

 Who is your brother-in-law?  I was in the 174th AHC in 1971.  Does he know about our Web Site  www.174ahc.org and the annual Reunions in Ft. Walton Beach?

The kit HeavyArty mentioned is the one I was speaking of...I think.

My brother-in-law flew a UH-1D model gun ship in the 174th. He specifically stated he flew a D-model armed with the M16 system. From what I understand, the H-model is mostly identical, but had a slightly more powerful engine.

I was able to find a Monogram 1/24 scale B-model with the M16 system.

 That info came from DRAGONUSA. I guess it was in the bucklet they usually send to LHSs and other dealers. Anyway I just ordered couple of those for myself via LHS here in Ottawa.

Sould mention that we have a guy around Phoenix that flies a restored H model(bought it from the Boneyard). He is a former Vietnam Army pilot. And by the way, it is armed with two mini-guns, one in each door, and he does go out in the desert and fire them> He has reason to though, his company maufacture's them, sorry can't publish the company name for srcurity reason though.

Im building one of the academy 1/35 UH-1C's at the moment,(the heavy hog)  i ment it would be nice to have one in 1/32 by academy, or an academy 1/35 UH-1D. thanks for keeping an eye out for the crew ive never seen a set in the shops over here.

Academy puts out 2 Charlie models, and there is another company that puts out Charlies as well i think it's simitar or something.  The Cobra Compamy has a mod kit to backdate academy's Charlie to a Bravo.  I happened to look in my closet and saw one of my 1/35th charlies.  If i run into a helo crew kit i'll pick it up and hold it for you. i like that kit and always like having extras.  again hope this helps out. heres a few links to those birds.

Thats great news about the 3311 helicopter crew, i looked on the dragon sight but didnt see anything, does anyone know when they are due for release or where it says they are?

Thanks, i wasnt thinking when i typed that lol, i forgot about the panda 1/35's (they are the big rivet hueys arnt they?)

I was thinking more about a Revell 1/32 UH-1C or an Academy 1/35 UH-1D/H, preferably an Academy slick to go with their 1/35 gunships.

Yes, I used them on an Academy UH-1C gunship.

You can.  Panda has 2 UH-1D kits in 1/35.  They have the necessary parts to build them as H models as well.  Neither comes with any weapons though.  They are pretty good, but weak on interior details.

If i can get hold of another 2 i would like to build the bushranger and a nighthawk versions. yea ive just looked, none to be found, found a picture of the seal craft, looks good but out of stock. the M16 system on the revell huey UH-1H  is terrible, cant remember what the 1/48 hog 60's are like, they seem to be the only 2 above 1/72 with that armament, would be nice to have them in 1/35 for the academy models, Is that what you converted the 1/35 seal guns for?

I had forgotten about that set.  It does have some great weapons in it.  Good luck finding it though.  It is long out of production.  I have been searching for it for years and have never seen it in any shop or at any web-based hobby supplier.

Nope, sorry, but it does not.  The Modern Machine Gun Set has standard M60s and USMC M60E3s, but no M60Ds.

Skypirate, Heavyarty hit the nail on the head. I did mean the helo crew kit and i have foegotten about the LSSC kit. I remember that the Australian army flew miniguns on their UH-1D,H that would look cool in 1/32.

Should be from the DML Helo Crew set.  That is the only one that includes M60Ds.  I did the same thing, convereted some D's to make an accurate M16 armament system.  The DML Light SEAL Support Craft boat also has 3 M60s without the front hand guards that will work as well.

Great idea Firehawk but which DML 1st Cav set do you mean, from the looks of the "Nam" set they only have M16's?

The M60s used with that system are basic M60s with a few modified components. First they have an electric solenoid for firing thr gun, and a modified buttstock/buffer. Buttstock/buffer is the same kind used on the Seawolves free 60s. The M60Ds from the DML 1st cav figure kit can be easily modified to C configuration.  Here are some pics.

I have seen pictures where the M60C barrels still had front sight post installed, I guess the had to use what they had.
