Please, help on the helicopter blade technology!!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 4, 2007 2:40 PM

I am a professional aeronautical (airplane) engineer man. I am a 2nd-year student at MIT aeronautical (airplane) engineering course. Also am studying business, so I could run an aircraft (airplane) company I plan on making/founding when I am all done with my education. Please, explain how the helicopter blade-controlling device works, I forgot the name for it too.Blush [:I]. Might have to also learn a bit about helicopters (or 'helis' as you call it). Please, explain the device to me please. A detailed and clear picture might work the best for me. Just so it explains each part.

 Best Regards,

 Demosthenes.

when you say blade-controlling device...?

are you wanting an explaination of the blade mounting, pitch input or how controlled/limited (such as on a fully articulating rotor head) the lead/lag movement? blade flap?

Why you would come to a modeling forum to ask is a little confusing, but...

I think you are asking about the cyclic control stick.  Check here for a full explanation.

By the way, typing in all italics makes it hard to read.  Normal sentence case is much easier on the eyes.

Another good resource on the helicopter industry is a magizine called "Rotor & Wing", they stay abrest of many of the developements in the industry, and have good technical articles and columns on aerodyanimcs.

Good luck!

Pick up a copy of the DVD Striaght UP which is avialable at different aviation outlets.  It is an IMAX film that goes into very good description of how the principal fligth dynamics work and are interrelated, with a crystal clear video explanation in ultra slow motion of the dynamic forces as they are applied to a Bell 47's main rotor.

I recommend Googling the term "swash plate".  This should point you in the right direction.

I'm curious, how can you be a professional when you're in your second year of undergrad?
