I seen this video clip and thought it was pretty wild. Other than redirecting thrust like a Harrier I dont see how it's working. I thought to myself I bet the guys down in the Helo section will know.

Don't worry, the rotors are actually turning.  I've shot digital video of our Apaches out at Hooper Stagefield and when I looked at it on my computer, it looked as if the rotors were not turning.  I don't know why, but for some reason that happens with digital video.  Bizarre.

It's called stroboscopic effect (at least I think you use the same term in English).

You get the same effect when looking at a spinning wheel and the lights going on and off very quickly (stroboscope). The eyes get confused and tell your brain that the wheel is standing still or even spinning in the opposite direction.

On cameras (digital or not) you get that effect when you set a high shutter speed.

It's the same principle used on the strobe guitar tuners. When the string hits the proper pitch the wheel appears to stop although it is actually spinning ver fast.

Wow, that is so bizarre. I kept staring at the blades expecting to see some kind of blurring along the edges but nothing!! Even the shadow cast on the fuesalage doesn't move.

Absolutely lucky guys.

I like how the other guy on-screen just casually walks back to to the other guy like nothing out of the ordinary just happened. Business as usual?
