Rob,

You lucky sod. Have you told the Mrs yet or will you smuggle them all in to the house bit by bit, and when she does find them, you tell her you've had them for ages and that you're suprised she hasn't noticed them before........(or am I the only bloke on here that has to do this!!!)

Sounds like you've had a great time....keep up the hard work!!!

I have made the pilgrimage to Brisbane several times now for the QMH Expo. It has always been one of the best and it just gets better every time.

Mobe1969,

My Dad served in the Army Air Corps in WW II and wast stationed in Brisbane with the 81st Air Depot, Eagle Farm, I believe they called the Air Field.  I had found a very small picture just last year of Dad and a couple other guys in khaki pants and white t-shirts I thought was "work" after WW II.  Then I noticed a sign in the background that said Queensland New South Wales.  And one of the guys was my namesake who was killed in a C-47 taking my Dad's place.  It was Mother's Day, May 13, 1945.  I'll have to scan a few of his pictures and post them.

  Melgyver....

Hey, there is a site i saw ages ago that i thought you may be interested in. I went and had a look and it has threads that lead to information and pics of your dads unit. If you go to    www.ozatwar.com    and look for Military Airfields in Australia and the Western Pacific Area in WW2.....enter that then find the list of airfields in Queensland and enter Eagle Farm it will display American units that served there. You will find the 81st Air Depot there........there is a good article on the 81st and its work assembling Waco gliders........lots of pics too....

Mr Peter Dunn, the sites author may be interested in your pictures too.......

Hope you enjoy the link i have given you.......

Boomerang,

Just read your post and checked out the Web Site on Eagle Farm.  Wow!  I've got "goose bumps"!  I found some pictures that are obviously from a "year book" on the 81st Air Depot.  The color P-38 and Unit patch.  The yellow arrowhead was actually a proposed patch I had duplicated last year and put on a replica WW II D6 sheepshin flight jacket.  Also looked the Crash of A-20 and saw a Capt May listed and I have two very good pictures of Capt May!  Dad told me he died in crash of A-20.  Dad was also attached to the 45th Support Group and I never knew where they were stationed.  Dad had a stroke in 1974 and died in 1989.  I didn't get much info out of him before.  I guess this belongs in the aircraft section, but thanks for mentioning the Expo or I never would have posted and known of the web page.  I have a "ton" of things to say but will have to E-mail you and Mobe1969 about it .  Thanks!

Mobe1969,

Yes indeed, it is a small world sometimes!

  Melgyver....

It gives me 'goose bumps' to know you were excited over the link i sent you. I sense your excitement in your words.... I am just glad it was of help. I was looking through the list of aircraft crashes myself. Sometimes i think we forget how many brave souls were lost outside of combat, just doing routine 'jobs' for the day. Sometimes we forget that those brave souls were all part of the big picture and all too important. Your father was one of those. My hat goes off to the people who dedicate themselves to researching those heroes and bring them back to us.

If you get to writing an email Melgyver, i will look foward to it..

Oh by the way, credit where due..........Wooty was the original poster about the QMH Expo. Thanks Wooty!!!

Yeah, I saw that crash at Superbus too. Amazing seeing Merlin engines just lying on the mountainside.
