Early Blackhawk interior color
Posted by rotorwash on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 10:39 PM

Gino,

I saw on ARC you posted info about early Blackhawk cockpits maybe being grey instead of black.  I tried to post this there, but I have horrible luck with ARC. Sometimes the pages load and sometimes they don't.  Anyway, they aren't tonight, so I thought I would post this pic here for you:

This photo is from the collections of the Army Aviation Museum and should be an early Blackhawk interior shot, but I'm not sure of the date.  Do you see anything interesting?  I ain't up on Hawks.

Hi Ray.    Nope.  It looks like a standard Blackhawk interior to me.  Notice how all the parts forward of the pilots seats is flat black.  That is the area I was talking about.  I guess they have always been black, just as I thought.  Thanks for the pic.

Gino,

Yeah, that's how it looked to me as well, but since I'm not that familiar with Hawks, I thought I would let someone else make the call.   This pic was one of two.  The other being this bird I posted earlier:

This is a a JUH-60A, 78-23012 (you can see the experimental equipment in orange).  This bird is from the first large batch of Hawks the Army ordered and I assume the interior pic is of this aircraft, but I have no hard evidence to back that up.

David,

Thanks, man.  I'll miss the scale modelers club as well.  If you're ever over in Auburn, look me up.

for those not familiar with hawks and how they tend to operate, the crew cheifseats are nylon and the back of it has a "bag" built into it. The seat back itself isvelcroed on and you rip that down, allowing you to store the belts out of the way. They also tend to catch alot of stuff like oil cans and the like.  Well, at least they did back in 85-86 when I was with them on Ft. Campbell. I remember a lot of oil stains on the center seats as well.

All that adds up to a bit of visual interest in your models and breaks up the grey monotony in the back end.

David's right. That Blackhawk is probably a fairly new one.It doesn't take long for the crew chief seats to get stains from 23699 oil or the 83282 Hydraulic fluid we would throw in the bags!Hey Dave,What unit were you in and what year did you graduate from 67T school. My class# was 9-86.I went on to the 82d Combat Aviation Battalion with the 82d Airborne.HOOOAHHH!!!

Hawwrench:

I didnt go 67T they didnt have a slot for me and I didn't want to wait around so I went 35K and headed off to Gordo (orange, yuck!) for Avionics school.  I dont remember my class number...I was so happy to get off that post I just didnt care! :-) Either way I started out with B/101 AVN on Ft. Campbell next to 5th Trans hanger on the "near" side of the airfeild. Had to walk to work every now and then LOL.   We had early 'hawks with no wing stubs and REALLY short Krap-ton wiring. The later block that we got just before I left and Charlie company was forming up had the stub wing fairings and (luckily for me ) longer wiring attached to the backsides of all the MS connectors.

On those earlier A models I spent a lot of time working on the Stabilator Amplifiers. Usually #2 would take a dump after about the third fligth.  Got pretty good at getting that back wall ceiling cover down and getting the Amp out in just a few minutes.  My fave was doing firewatch outside and standing in the APU downstream exhuast to stay warm in the winter!

The really wierd thing is I followed my First Seargeant over to 3rd AHB (later 2/3 Avn BN)  in Geibelstadt in '86.  That's where I got the Cobra and OH-58 expeireince (and yes Ray HHC even had 2 old -H models for ya!)

Fun times!
