Help, please! What helos operate or are assigned to USCG Cutters?
Posted by rockythegoat on Saturday, December 1, 2007 2:50 PM

Okay, since I can't find any 1/700 HH-65 Dolphins (WEM no longer makes) for my Hamilton and Bear cutter kits, I need some help from youse guys.

What helos operate off of what cutters?

  1. Hamilton -
  2. Bear -
  3. Wind class Icebreakers -
  4. Others? -

Any help is very much appreciated!  Going to also post this on the "ships" forum.

1.  HAMILTON class - HH-52 Sea Guard, HH-65 Dolphin, MH-68 Stingray, in an emergency HH-3F Pelican

2.  Bear class - HH-52, HH-65, MH-68, HH-60

3.  WIND class - Sikorsky HNS-1(R-4) Hoverfly, Sikorsky R-5, HH-52, Navy LAMPS-2 Sea Sprite

4.  RELIANCE class 210' WMEC - HH-52, HH-65, MH-68, UH-1

4a.  MACKINAW - no flight deck, but did operate HO4S-2G (HH-19G) Chickasaw and HO3S (R5/H5) Dragonfly form the stern deck at times.

Generally any of the smaller helos, from the other armed forces could land on a USCG cutter flight deck.

cg bob, where did you get that pic of the mighty mac?? Any pic of her is hard to find. I was on her 89-90, kinda miss the old girl.

as for helos, when I was on the mac, we only did vertreps, there was too much crap on the fantail to land a housefly (mooring winches and things like that) We did several vertreps with dolphins, and jayhawks.

That specific photo came from the USCG Historian's web page on icebreakers.  Two other sources are the photo album at Fred's Place, and Boatnerd photo galleries.  Here's a couple of pictures of the Mighty Mac from the Boatnerd galleries.

CG Bob:  Thanks for the help (I answered your reply to me in the Ships section also).

Interesting that the USCG uses the 60 on the Bears but not as much on the Hamiltons.  ANy particualr reason?  And this is also why I'm on the apparently fruitless hunt to locate some of WEM's 1/700 HH-65s, as I've not seen any photos of HH-60s on the Hamiltons, although I assumed they can use them.

The color shots of the "Mac" are one of the reasons why I like to model USCG equipment.  They just look cool!  (Not to start an argument with anyone, but, I'm a fan of the orange and blue racing stripe.  I know not everyone on the board here is.)

Great pics.  I forgot about the USCG Historian site.  Gonna have to do some trolling in there.

Thanks again!

I forgot to include the 378's as being capable of operating the HH-60.  The main shipboard helo is the HH-65, followed by the MH-68.  You'll need to look at the USCG page to find the homepors for the 378's and 270's - compare those locations with the USCG Air Stations.  10 of the 378's are stationed in the Pacific, and only two in the Atlantic.  All of the 270's and most of the 210's are home ported on the Atlantic or Gulf coast.  The simple truth is that there are more  HH-65's (95 total) than there are HH-60's (42 total).  The HH-65 Air Stations tend to be closer to the major homeports for the cutters.  For example, there are four 378' WHEC stationed at Alameda, and Air Staion San francisco has several HH-65's.
