Hey, I'll post images of my 1/144th MH-60L when I get to them, but I have rebuild the majority of the cockpit/interior, and I have cut out the doors and the windows, and I am currently working on the internal aux. fuel tank.

Anyways, it's looking good.  Thanks for the pics, and can't wait to see more (I will definitely pic up either this kit of the SH-60B kit.)

Take care,

Austin

Thanks Ray

Im NOT looking forward to the drive over there. The weather is awful now (you getting any of this? ) I wish it would just SNOW and be done with it!  I worked onpaint issues last night and got the clearcoat on this morning. I'll lay in decals tonight and do very minimal weathering, as a CAG bird should be.  I should have photos this weekend.  good build so far!

Most of the paint is on the machine now, I got the black on last night, need to do a little touchup, that masking for the black was tricky enough but the top of the turtelback was the worst of it, that definitely needs touchup.

If I can remember tonight I will grab a pic of how far along she is.

Going to the Lake Charles contst this weekend with this kit as my primary.  Ray---I'm Gettin' R Done!

Wing_Nut

your photos are MUCH crisper than I could have achieved with my camera even with the macro setting.  Overall sheen should be flat in this scale....you would be looking at the aircraft from 100 feet or so away. A high gloss on the machine in real life wouldnt look rigth in this scale, so a semi gloss in this scale would be more effective (except on the windows, those should be clear and shiny)

I plan to paint up the interior tomorrow and get on with assembly. I may have more pics this weekend.

Well it took a while but here is my 1st post in the helo section.  The title of this thread caught my eye so I took a look at the photo.  Very nice looking helo I say to myself.  Then some one mentions it is available in 144th... and if you've seen the stuff I have posted lately in the a/c forum. I am most definitely in my 144th period. (I wonder if Van Gough had a 144th periodConfused [%-)])

I was on the way to the LHS and they had it on the shelf and it was on the cheap side so I got it.  Here are some sprue shots. Looks like this is gonna be fun. 2007 was my 1st bipe w/rigging so 2008 can be my 1st helo.

The 1 sprue is the entire kit except for the clear nose below. The giant penny (that thing really does get around) is for scale.  The idea of the clear nose is that it is easier to mask the windows than try and glue them in.  BUT they should have made the framing a bit crisper to make it easier to mask. The rest of the pics are half the cabin, interior… with seat belts already in there, cabin top and the decals.  There’s even raised buttons on the control panel that’s about ¼” x 3/8”.

A question though for the helo buffs.  the photo show it is pretty clean but what type of sheen will it have ?  Flat? Semi-gloss?

David,

So I leave and you FINALLY do a helicopter!!  They look great, by the way.  I can't wait to see the finished product. I really like the one you detailed. Any chance of a closer pic of the details?

As promised, I manged to get them both in one pic. The interior on the right is detailed with strip stock and the left is OOB. I drilled out the windows on the kit that will be detailed and added cyclics from wire. I may make the roof H rack as well as add the brake handle that hangs down. I cut out the center row of seats and added some tiny crates. I'm not done detailing but I needed to knock off for the night.

So far the kit is a breeze. About as detailed as a 1/72 kit twice it's size.

Scotty Thanks Much

Happy New Year! I have had a SUPER productive day:

Went to Lowes and Best Buy, IHOP and Starbucks

Scratchbuilt 1/700  director radar for USS Trathen 40MM Bofors gun mounts x2

Scratchuilt 1:1 wood reciever block and upper grip assembly (wood ) for Return of the Jedi Scout Trooper blaster pistol.  Had to stop for the gorilla glue to dry :-)

Cranked out most of the primary assembly on one of the Knighthawks, and finished up some parts on the other. One will be OOB, the other will recieve as much detail as I can get in there in the next two weeks.  The most difficult part so far has been the two-part HIRRS units but now that I have one under my belt I have a MUCH better understanding of how to crank out the other one in short order. Basically, lay one upper half on and work on the lower half, don't try to get them done ahead of time as a subassembly, it just doesnt work right.

I will post up some pics probably tomorrow to show what it looks like so far.

David,

Form what I remember it was a gloss black.  HSC-2 changed colors on their "CAG" bird and it is now a very gross red whit and yellow and grey....not attractive trust me.  The other gloss Black and White scheme was sharp.  Hope this helps bro.  Happy New Year....I too have the kit and love the 1/144 Dragon H-60 series.  I wish they would do an HH-60H or an MH-53E....my current and former bird.  Let me know if I can help any further

Scotty

PM sent....

for everyone who now has the kit and is wondering as I am, is the upper deck gloss black or dark grey? the color callouts on the kit dont seem to jive with the real photo.

thanks

David

Are you kidding?  Those aren't grenade boxes by the ICS box, they are 4 place cup holders.  The pilot's are in luck too, drinks in the map pocket and maps everywhere else.Big Smile [:D]

I don't think that doing a 1/35 MH-60S would be all that hard.  The S is based on an L airframe.  As Gino mentioned, the biggest difference would be the head.  The fillet at the root end of the L blade would need to be cut off (all of the 60 blades are made without a square corner at the root end, the Army has that added), the spindles need rebuilding and some extra lines and wires need to be added.  As far as I know, the tail fold on the S is the same as the L so all you need to do in the back is make a folding stabilator.  There are some other minor changes like antennas, windows and mirrors that need to be made as well.  But this seems like a very doable project for someone with reasonable scratchbuilding skills.

Scotty,

I know what you mean I was with HCS-5 in BIAP and Balad, did a tour with the Redwolves as well.

The only thing the Hotel dosn't have is the GAU-21.  To bad that thing shoots as fast as a 240.  The H is the best suited for the CSAR/SPECWAR mission, the H does have a lot more legs it's a shame to see it go, keep 'em flying especialy the ones you got from 5.

The HH-60H already carries all of that, plus the SEALS, their geear and more gas.  I am just biased though since I was a Sh*tter driver turned Hotel bubba.  I think the 60S is a nice bird, but needs to be improved before it takes our mission in country

I am actually stuck on the idea of an Aussie Army Blackhawk or Aussie Navy Seahawk in 1/35, but wouldn't know where to begin...

They just need to bring out an MRH-90 in 1/35

the first MH-60s are going to replace the CH-46 in use by the Navy.  the primary mission was logistics.  The pics are of an aircraft that was set up to have pictures taken of the cabin and cabin deck.

A special system of rollers can be installed in the cabin to help out in loading and unloading, the cabin has hook up for an internal AUX tank simular to the Pave Hawk's, also seats can be installed like on a Blackhawk.

The Armed Helo version will have short wings for a Hellfire launcher on each side, windo mounted M240's, and a GAU-21 mounted in the cabin almost like the Pave Hawk.

Thanks for that Firehawk.. Very helpfull!

I don't know anything about Navy Helicopters, so is there a reason for the cabin to be empty?

Yeah, I know what you meant, and wasn't directing my coment at you. Rather I was expressing the fact that it is a cool scheme and little bit of work shouldn't stop someone from doing it..

Sorry, I don't have any pics handy.  It is different though.

I never said it couldn't be done, just that it wasn't as simple as painting a Blackhawk or Pavehawk grey.

Yeah, what would modeling be without a little challenge.. The people that say you cant are the people that don't.. I prefer to see people talk about how it could be done rather than its too difficult! It really is a cool scheme not to be attempted..

Cheers..

Heavy Arty,I looked at the pic and I can't tell the difference in the tail versus a standard Hawk.Do you have any pics of the difference between the two?.I love a challlenge,I could scratchbuild the head I think and maybe modify some 1/35 Apache blades to look more like the Seahawk's blades.MAYBE!!!

Unfortunately, it isn't that easy to make a 1/35 Navy MH-60S.  You can't simply take an Academy 1/35 UH-60 or MH-60 kit and paint it gray.  Not if you want it to be accurate anyways.  The biggest change is the rotor head and blades.  The Naval versions have a different rotor head and rotor blades with a 30 degree angle at the root ends to allow them to fold.  The vertical tail is also shaped differently and has provisions to be folded.  There are lots of bumps and sensors all over the fuselage as well.  Lastly, the cockpit and instrument panel are totally different too.
