UH-1 Medevac Vietnam
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, October 20, 2003 11:18 AM

My father was a medevac pilot in Vietnam and for his upcoming birthday I am wanting to build him a model of one of the helicopters that he flew. I cannot seem to find medevac markings for helicopters on the internet. Anyone know of a decal maker for helicopters? The crosses are actually pretty simple and I suppose I could do them myself but how do I get the scale correct? It would be on a 1/48th scale model. I am definately not a math genius so I would need some exact numbers from someone if I were to do them myself.

So two questions: Anyone make medevac markings? And what measurements would I use if I had to do them myself?

Thanks a lot,
Steve

Steve,
Ours were square and were the same size around the aircraft. I don't remember the exact size but on our ships, the white square with red cross went from the cargo door window to the bottom of the cargo door ... and as I said, was square so that would give you the width. Same size was on the nose. We didn't have them anywhere else.
Hope that helps but I'm sure someone will have exact measurements for you. All you'll have to do is convert them to 1/48th scale. By the way, for the 1/48th bird I've done, I've used the decals from the Monogram UH-1 Medevac kit. This is a horrible kit and is a reissue of an old kit but for about $10 it's worth it for the decals and a few spares.

Okay, thanks for the info. I will see if I can do them myself as I still cannot find medevac markings. By the way, where did you find the Monogram kit? I have not been able to find a Medevac specific kit, I am just building a D model slick kit and will put the Medevac markings on. Unfortunately I will not have any of the litters.

There is a ROCO medical marking sheet that has 3 or 4 standard med markings that fit perfect for 1/48 and 1/72 scale. However, I will tell you this I have been crewing medivac hueys for quite sometime. The markings are rarely in spec. Even the ones that are done at the AVCRADs. There is a standard size that is listed in one of our TMs. I have it at home but I am deployed right now. Dave

Steve,
Troy (PE64) has got you covered. This is the exact kit to which I was referring. You may try to get the Mfg # and do a internet search at some of the on-line hobby shops if EBay doesn't work out. By the way, the kit includes some figures that are about as poor as the kit is but it does have a simple litter. There are two soldiers to carry the litter .... a pilot figure (yes just one) and a wounded soldier to go on the litter.
