Vinyl damage to plastic--photo evidence
Posted by PatlaborUnit1 on Sunday, February 3, 2008 2:40 PM

hi guys

I wanted to pass along a photo I just took of some vinyl AMT Ertl Tigercat tires in my spares box. The vinyl completely melted the plastic and it destroyed two of my Tigercat buildups. This is from a third plane that had been built gears-up for a customer.  Its been in the box for about two years now and today digging through the box I found this.

How this relates to helos is with the MRC Hueys. They have vinyl belts (maybe the Smer, too, not sure)  Ray had a problem a while back with this and I worked on fixing some rotor damage for him. I am pretty sure there is a warning thread on this from about a year back.

Either way this photo should really make you reconsider using vinyl of any sort in your models. This is now weeping oil and has fully melted the exhaust stacks and the wheel insert seen in the photo. The NLG wheel melted its way into the storage box.

If you have MRC kits go dig them out and check them for any sort of vinyl gun belt damage.....

David,

It's the Siminar UH-1B kit that had the damaged rotors. As far as I know the MRC kits are fine.  Anybody else had troubles with the MRC kits?

David, sorry to hear about your Tigercats. I feel your pain, and the F7F is the only kit I have purchased resin wheels for -- just for this reason.

YES! I received an older MRC UH-1C kit via ebay (factory sealed) that had the vinyl gunbelts packaged inside the clear parts sprue. Needless to say, the windscreens were all melted with nice little railroad tracks going across them. Tried polishing them out to no avail, and MRC's customer service department has no inclination of sending out replacement parts whatsoever. Heck, they won't even return an email. (That being said, I don't suppose anyone has an extra clear sprue laying around, do they?)

So yes, especially if you have an older MRC Huey boxing, check the packaging of those ammo belts!!!

Andy,

Sorry to hear about your MRC kit. I have 9 of them in all the boxings (except the new special nose art edition), both MRC and Academy, and including the Muskets boxing with the M21 system and none have the vinyl ammo belt problem.  In fact the old Muskets boxing has the belts packaged seperately.  Anyway, PM me and we'll get you a new windscreen.

To clarify, it was one of the MRC Huey Hog boxings, kit #BA107.

I also have different versions -- 2 "Sharks" and 1 Muskets -- and agree that normally, the ammo belts are packed seperately or loose in the box outside all the bags. This older Heavy Hog is the first one I have seen where the vinyl was packaged in with the clear sprue baggie. Perhaps they made one run with the bad vinyl and realised their mistake.
